1) I couldn't really decided whether to get the 970 or 980 but in the end I decided I could just about stretch to getting the 980 so went with it anyway - good choice?

2) I like the idea of the 3k display because after seeing the retina macbooks they do look a lot better than standard HD. My only worry though is the effect on gaming performance because I know that I will only be gaming at 1080. Will it scale nicely? Will it cause a performance hit?

3) Any comments on the rest of the spec? This is my first time customising a laptop so it was fairly confusing.

Cheers

The 980 will be much better for gaming so a good choice. Overall looks a good set up. If you are looking to make any savings, an i5 CPU will be fine for gaming, although if you are OK with what you have the i7 gives options for other stuff as well.

An i5 didn't seem to be a choice when speccing, only two i7s. I went with the slightly cheaper option.

Do you have any ideas about the 3k screen and performance hits?

I just assumed a choice of CPU, my bad will check next time. Can't help with the screen sorry, but from the couple of reviews I have seen people seem pleased with this laptop.
