15.6" vs 17.3" Pascal Octane III

You would think that the only difference between the two is size but that's not the case.

If set up with the same configurations, you'll find that the two have a ~£97 difference which is to be expected. But the 17.3" isn't just bigger than the 15.6", it varies in design.
The 15.6" Octane III is basically just an Octane II with Pascal availability whilst the 17.3" seems to have a different design, this can mean various things.

1. It may have a different cooling system set up.
2. Its upgradability may vary.
3. Hardware placement may be different.

One of the most apparent differences is that the 17.3" variant doesn't seem to support a SIM module. So I don't think it should be given the same name as its predecessors as people may buy it under the impression that it's the same laptop with a bigger screen. What I would like to see though is a 15.6" variant of the 17.3" Octane III, with the newer design that is. Although this may just be a slight mistake on PCSpecialist's behalf.

I'm not really sure I follow you. Both systems are entirely different. They are named similarly due to the similar spec available between the PCs with only minor differences, as you have noted, outwith the screen size.

Remember that these custom laptops are based on Clevo barebones chassis. It's up to Clevo what each of them has on-board hardware wise.

Like I said, the 15.6" Octane III is basically an Octane II with Pascal availability. The GTX1080 series GPUs should've simply been added to the Octane II's configuration options rather than have a duplicate that takes on the same name of a newer Clevo chassis design.

The three things I mentioned before are differences that the new chassis design may have introduced and, therefore, two notebooks with such variances should not share the same "model name" so to speak.

They aren't the same though. The 1080 isn't MXM.

"Octane III" and "Octane III" sound pretty similar. By the way, I simply mean the numbering when I say "model name".
Just like an iPhone 6 is a newer version of the iPhone, the older being an iPhone 5. The Octane III is a newer Clevo chassis, the older being the Octane II.
If anything, the 15.6" Octane III should at the very least be called Octane II v2 since the only difference between it and the Octane II are Pascal capability. That's all I'm saying.

The 1080 isn't MXM.
I don't know what that means.

I don't know what that means.

Yet you're willing to argue?

The Octane to the Octane 2 was a similar upgrade. Later on in the year the Octane III will be available with the latest CPUs.

The Chassis number has increased from Clevo so the Model name has increased to reflect that.

Iphones are a great example by the way. Upgrade absolutely feck all yet change the name from the 4 to the 5 with a new OS.

Not trying to argue, just trying to prove a point.

The Chassis number has increased from Clevo so the Model name has increased to reflect that.
By that definition, an iPhone 5 would have to be called and iPhone 6 as soon as the iPhone 6 is released as PCS have in this case.

Iphones are a great example by the way. Upgrade absolutely feck all yet change the name from the 4 to the 5 with a new OS.
Yes but you get the point I was trying to make.

I do, I simply don't agree with it. The chassis has been upgraded to allow for the new slot of GPU. You cannot simply put a GTX1080 into the chassis that was named the Octane II, it doesn't work as the MXM format.... for all intents and purposes here... is redundant. Therefore the design had to change to incorporate the new hybrid slot of card along with the new power requirements. There are likely also cooling changes and various "under the hood" improvements made.

With that in mind, and given the fact that "II" and "III" effectively means "v2" and "v3", I don't agree that they should have named it "II v2" as to my mind that would mean "v2 v2".

The model name is the Octane, what follows is the version number of the Octane.

Right, whatever MXM means, that explains a lot. I didn't realise there were any "under the hood" changes made to the Octane II to accommodate the new Pascal GPUs since they are similar in design and specification.
Nevertheless, I still believe that it should instead be called the Octane II v2 since no real changes have been made except to accommodate an upgrade whilst the Octane III sports an entirely new design. This is simply to differentiate between the two.

So I guess I'll agree to disagree.

Were there considerable changes made between the original Octane and the Octane II aesthetically? As far as I know it was an internal spec arrangement only. I could be wrong though.

You're going to be really mad when you see the Octane IV.
