15.6" vs 17.3"

So I'm trying to decide between the Vortex IV in these 2 sizes.

Atm I'm thinking the specs will be ~:

i7 Quad core 4810MQ (2.8ghz)
8gb Kingston Hyper-X Impact Ram
Nvidia GTX 870m

250gb Samsung EVO SSD for OS and programs
750gb WD Scorpio 7500rpm for music, photos, files etc

I do mostly photo/video editing, watch movies, music, browse net, very occasional gaming.

Say I went for exactly the same specs as shown here, would there be any noticeable difference in performance? (Only thing I can think of is the larger screen to render, but not sure of the noticeable impact)

Also, does any rich person out there have one of each to offer up to each other and show the size differences for me? Not sure if the 17incher will just be a beast and too big to want to move around at all.... (That is really my biggest concern) Then again I am used to my widescreen 18" desktop now and don't want to regret getting the smaller 15.6".

And finally, the dimensions of the laptop as shown on the specs are the following: 376mm x 256mm x 35~43mm (for the 15.6") or 412mm x 276mm x 41.8~45.4mm (for the 17.3"). What does the 35~43mm mean? That's a pretty large variable and I can't really see any reason it would change or be different from machine to machine..?

Hope someone can help me with this.

Cheers

Sam

There wouldn't be any difference in performance, that's dictated by the internals mainly cpu, memory and ssd/hdd. The chassis simply dictates how many hard drives you can fit ie 1 x 2.5" + 2 x mSATA in the 15", 2 x 2.5 hdd/ssd + 2 x mSATA's in the 17". It also has improved cooling. But the main feature is the bigger screen. Same pixels over larger area, so doesn't need more power to drive from the GFX card, but will draw more power when running off battery (which is the same on both i believe

What does the 35~43mm mean?

I believe that refers to thinnest point and thickest point.

Thank you for the reply Spyder, that makes total sense.

I just realised, does that mean the 15.6" chassis would not be able to fit those 2 hard drives I specified? I'm guessing not, which kind of makes my decision for me...

Also since I see you have the 17.3", any real world feedback would be cool, do you find it bulky and a nuisance?

No, you wouldn't be able to fit 2 x 2.5" drives, just one, but you could reconfigure and have an mSATA SSD (exactly the same internals as normal ssd, just without the external case) and then your Scorpio Black in the 2.5" bay

I travel with mine a lot around the country for work and occasionally abroad, bought a decent 17" bag for it. I've never really been bothered by bigger stuff being heavier, just means i'll lift harder :winkiss: For me, the benefit of the larger screen, plus the extra cooling, plus the extra hard drive bay nailed it and I certainly haven't regretted it. In game, the gpu gets around high 70's which i think is very good, way below it's threshold. The Vortex as a chassis is very solid, worth the extra for the aluminium case. Obviously I'm biased, but I'd always say go for the 17".

It really depends on your lifestyle.

If you travel a lot - go to uni, or you're just a hipster and like to do your editing at your local starbucks - a 15.6 inch would be nicer.

My current laptop is 16" which has been a marvellous size.

I would personally go for the 15.6 as I tend to move a lot with my laptop and 17" is just too big.

However, 17 is much more immersive! :) also more space and better cooling

Thank you for the input stressed. I won't really be used in coffee shops and the like. Mostly used on a desk, then moved from that desk to another building and used again at a desk most likely. Think I have settled on the 17", just done a spec check thread before I go for it.
