17 inch Defiance V with 1070, gets pretty hot.

Hey all,

I have just received and set up my Defiance V. Runs nice and runs Fortnite at 144fps on max (monitor rate is 144 so set fps to match).

Cpu temps when playing hit the low 90's and the left hand side of the keyboard where psu and gpu are gets really hot, a bit uncomfortable on the fingers.

Does anyone else have one and does it get that hot?

Received mine today, it sits at 55-60 spiking as high as 80 when it's just on the desktop and 0 CPU utilization and sounding like a jet engine. Dare to open chrome it can spike as high as 90, I opened battlefield and it spiked to 99, less than 10 seconds of playing and it was at 95+ on my cores, while sounding like a jet engine. And I paid for the repaste, ridiculous. Riddled with other issues too.

How this passed QC and testing I have no idea.

Oh and the 1070 keeps ramping up while not being used since it's meant to use the integrated graphics which adds to the already noisy CPU.

Just to check, these are the 17" Defiances with the i7 8750H CPUs, and not the 7700HQ ones?

And do you have Clevo Control Centre installed, which I believe can allow for managing the fan profiles?

This one probably isn't a fault of PCS or the laptop chassis, but could be a driver issue and/or a question of apps/programs running in the background. I had similar things with my GTX 970 - it just wouldn't downclock properly.

The temps, however, sound atrocious. I'd suggest contacting PCS for an RMA and (politely ofc) ask for an explanation of what happened to let it get to you in this condition. Whether it was bad QC and/or something happened in transit.

@rsmarsha Those CPU temps do sound too high. I'm not familiar with Fortnite but I assume it doesn't run the CPU at 100% load, probably nowhere close, right.. How are the GPU temps?

Yeah mine is the 17" 8750h, Got the control center installed, yeah i can manage the fan profile to make it less audible but that's a trade off for even worse thermals.

The GPU doesn't even seem to be ramping up when the fans do which is the odd thing, shows it at idle speeds yet the temp can spike to 50 and then the fans keep going off.

I can only assume it's a really, really, really shoddy re paste job, which is a bit of a joke since i paid for the service to improve thermals, which has made it borderline unusable.

Just did a reinstall to rule out any software/driver issues and it's at 60-70 with spikes to 85+ typing this reply

A clean reinstall doesn't entirely rule out a driver issue if the manufacturer (Nvidia, Clevo, whoever..) have a problem with their drivers :S But regardless of whether that's at play I'd be surprised if that explained the CPU temps.

Perhaps give them a call tomorrow, the lines are open to 8pm I believe.

Quite possibly. Would also suggest contacting PCS and seeing what they have to say. Do let us know too.

Yeah replied to an existing thread where I had a boot error, that turned out to be the control centre.

The main thing I noticed is that as its an aluminium case the keyboard near the essential wasd keys gets very hot. Power connects there and gpu is top left. Not sure where cpu is in relation to it, maybe that's next to where the power connects in?

I should add that streaming (twitch) is more laggy/stuttering on the new laptop. Didn't get lag on my old one.

Do you have an issue with micro freezes? Every time i open chrome for some reason it freezes my system for a split second, noticing it in other things also like opening some settings.

Read somewhere that nvidia optimus may the issue (switching between dedicated and igpu for power saving)

I did have an issue with that on my old laptop and disabled the Intel graphics.

My main concern is the cpu temps and how hot the keyboard gets.

Plus twitch stuttering as I said.

I didn't think the defiance had optimus anymore. I thought that was no longer a thing.

Is it not? Maybe it's not Optimus that controls it anymore but the IGPU drives the display for the most part and the DGPU only powers up when there's a 3d task running. There's an option the "smart switching" for the gpus in the clevo control centre.

The nvidia control Centre (or whatever its called) has various options for controlling which gpu if I remember right. I used to just disable the internal gpu.

Pc spec have said to call support and let them remote in to check temps and stuff. I'm concerned about how hot the keyboard and case get.

Even if i was to return this laptop and get a different model, there isn't really another 1070 model other than the more expensive options. I'd have to go to an Optimus IX and get a 1060 instead, I'm sure that's ok for single screen laptop gaming though. The optimus is a 144hz screen just without G-Sync.

I've been offered a return which I think I'll do and then order a different model. I'm told there is a bios update that might sort the heat problems. I don't see how it will fix the problem though. It may reduce the cpu temps but not enough to stop the keyboard melting my hand.
