1st Gaming PC - Custom build

Hi everyone,

Currently looking at purchasing my first gaming PC next week. My main game is Modern Warfare & Warzone 2 and that's all I really play right now, will I be playing other games like any new Call of Duty release, GTA 6 (when it eventually comes out), Red Dead, etc. In the future, I would like to have the possibility of upgrading my PC with different parts to improve it if I thought that was required, so I am trying to factor that into this build.

Additionally, I would like to get into streaming and would love to play Warzone competitively eventually, so I would like a PC that would be capable of this. The gaming monitor that I currently have is found below:

LG UltraGear Gaming Monitor 27GL83A-B, 27 inch, 1440p, 144Hz, 1ms MBR, IPS Display, HDR 10, AMD FreeSync, Nvidia G-Sync, Energy Saving, Displayport, HDMI, Anti Glare, Adjustable Stand - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07XLDLZPF?ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_D4RN6QPAD936ZQVAKD2E&th=1

My budget is in and around 2K. If I can get the desired spec for less than that, then that would be ideal. But at the same time, if a bit extra is required to hit that spec, then so be it... I am new to this and really have no history with PCs, but I have asked a friend who is knowledgeable, and this is the build I have came to after speaking with him:

This would be the cost saver build that's still excellent but doesn't compare in performance to the above build. It'll do 1440p 144z but nothing can compete with the 7800X3D at the minute it's a stupid beast that'll run for 10 years no problem provided you keep it cool and maintain it properly

Thanks mate, appreciate you providing the builds! I should have clarified, my budget was in and around 2000 euro as opposed to GBP. Nevertheless, it is very tempting splashing the extra cash for the increased performance, as this comes in at just under 2,400 euro.

Forgive my limited knowledge, but would you mind clarifying if it would be ok for me to switch some things around? For example, the original GPU I had in mind was a 3060ti, where as yours includes a RX 6750 XT. Is there a reason for this, such as compatibility? As they both seem to be in and around a similar price point.

The second build you gave me comes in at 1,848 in euro, with a Ryzen 5 7600. Whereas my original build included an Intel i7, which I understood would have been a better CPU. I was looking at an i5, but my friend advised on the i7 if I planned on streaming whilst gaming on the same PC.

Just for reference, my build came in at 1,778 euro, albeit with a cheaper motherboard and cooler.

Would you mind providing your opinion on this?

Thanks in advance!

Just to answer above mate, I've a 3060Ti and love it performs very very well at 1440p running on a 144hz without any issues so far so I can recommend it. the 6750XT is a stronger card though it will perform better for just a little more in cost, if the budget is there it's a better card but like I say I can still recommend the 3060Ti personally

The Intel i7 is previous gen the 13th gen would be the one you want if you wanted to go Intel. I'd recommend the 13600K though over the 13700K in gaming, you would barely notice a difference in gaming and only if you're playing at 1080p which you aren't so not worth the extra cost. Also the 7600 is better CPU when thinking about upgrade paths, in future you can drop a 7800X3D into the same slot for a gigantic upgrade whereas the Intel CPU's do not have that upgrade path, the 13900 isn't worth it from a gaming perspective in my opinion. If you wanted to go Intel the 13600K is the recommend CPU. 12700K is out performed by the 7600 and if you're looking at benchmarks make sure you avoid the site than rhymes with boozer Frenchmart because it's notoriously inaccurate and frankly banned in a lot of tech discussions places because it's data is simply completely made up nonsense that pushed Intel as the king of everything for some reason, I don't get it and don't trust it. They will lie to you

Personally yeah the Euro changes it because it does put you significantly over budget, let me see if I can find a middle ground where you can still get the 7800X3D and save some cash

Thanks lad, really appreciate the support and advice.

Since I started looking into Gaming PC specs it feels like I'm learning to walk all over again haha. That one there is closer to the budget and looks tasty :) She could be the one I go for next week!

Nice one again, very grateful!

No worries at all lad! Sounds like we're from the same Island so glad to help, pop back here before you buy it the regulars here generally know when the best deals come up on the configurator so we might be able to help save you a bit more cash by moving things around a little

One more tip, save the quote above on the chance prices increase when it comes time to order PCS will honour the price quote for 7 days I believe and the hardware market the prices fluctuate a lot

Hello mate, me again :D

Cheers for the help yesterday. Since chatting yesterday I have remained firmly down the rabbit hole...

As a result, I believe I have learned that the CPU chosen will most likely lead to a bottleneck based on the 3060 ti that I have selected. My limited understanding is telling me that as the 7800X3D is a beast, the 3060 ti will most likely hold it back meaning I won't get the full performance out of it. Can you confirm if this understanding is correct?

Now, that being said, I don't think it really matters too much right now as my monitor is 144hz anyway, and I should still get that with the CPU and GPU chosen. However, as mentioned in the original post, I would like to leave my options open to upgrade down the line. For example, to a 4090 or something similar to allow the build to reach full potential (possible within the next year or so).

That really isn't an option right now due to budget constraints, but it doesn't bother me too much due to the monitor limitations anyway. But I have tweaked the most recent build that you provided to better accommodate a future GPU upgrade. See below:

My thinking surrounding the above is the upgrade to the X670E mobo as you recommended in your original "super build", in addition to a change from 850W PSU to 1000W PSU. Also a slight increase from 512gb to 1tb in 1st SSD drive. My understanding is that these parts would better accommodate a beast GPU? Would you mind providing your feedback on this?

Also, I was considering upgrading H100i elite to H150i elite if necessary, but I left it as is on the build above as the case selected wouldn't allow it and its a minor thing that can be changed next week if it is recommended.

Cheers in advance,
Mark

No worries mate and to answer these from the bottom up

H100i is more than enough for the 7800X3D it's very efficient and doesn't get super hot at all. The H150i would be spending a lot of money for not much benefit, the H100i is more than enough to pair with that CPU

The X670E over the B650 comes down to the nitty gritty details, they are both capable and will work just fine in either case but they come with slightly different features. It's up to yourself to find out if you need any of the features that the X670E offers. It's a great board but very expensive

1000W PSU is always a good idea if budget allows, makes it super easy to upgrade later

I wouldn't recommend going above 500GB on the primary drive mainly to help encourage good "house keeping". This first drive will host the operating system of the computer, and you want this running at it's most optimal at all times, storage drives including SSD's tend to slow down as they fill up usually this starts to happen around the 50-60% full mark so the goal on the primary drive is to keep it half full to ensure the most optimal operating system function. Having a larger drive will encourage you to use up the space because of course you will everyone would, a smaller drive I find it's easier to get it to 50% and not use it anymore

I think you're looking into "bootle necking" too loosely and not factoring in what the parts are for and doing first. The first thing when selecting a GPU is matching it to the monitor, if you have a 1440p 144hz monitor then you get a GPU to support that. The CPU also factors in to the monitor selection in that as you increase resolution on the monitor you take the brunt of the work off the CPU and onto the GPU. 1080p is super CPU heavy, 1440p is more GPU heavy but the CPU still does it's thing and 4K is super GPU heavy

There is a balance to be found and where you want to be is that the GPU is at 100% usage for as much of that time as possible. It's the most expensive piece in the build and it's designed to be ran at 100% all the time, that makes sure you get your moneys worth. Having a CPU with legs means you can continue upgrading the GPU for many years probably 10+ with the build I recommended by only changing the GPU

Hopefully this makes sense it's a while wall of text

Just another thing I noticed you've selected the 220T twice now fair warning that's a very very small case. I imagine you would struggle to fit the bigger triple slot GPU's into one of those if at all, not the the best choice for future planning, also the H150i if you wanted to go for it flatout would not fit in there. I'm not sure it fits in the 4000D to be honest it's massive

Sweet thanks for that quick response.

Makes perfect sense, just seeing some stuff online and trying to develop an understanding so you've definitely helped with that explanation. I think I will up the PSU to 1000W to allow for future upgrades without having to buy new PSU. Will drop the SSD back down as what you are saying makes sense to me, I will fill that baby up in no time if there's plenty of room, so will keep that at 512gb.

I think I will look into the differences between mobos a little more before making any decision on that, but I would consider paying the extra 100 quid or so if I think it's worth it.

Finally, the case was just a case that I selected randomly on this occasion as the 4000D wasn't on the list today for some reason... And most likely did that yesterday too, so I will select a case on the day depending on whether I decide to up the mobo or not, as I could put that towards a better case if not.

Thanks again for the help mate, really appreciate the time taken to explain (y)

Steve, the original build you suggest, If I wanted to go for this, would I just select it all through the website on build a PC? Does it come with windows installed?

If you click the green link at the bottom of the spec in my post it will take you straight to the page with all the parts selected and yes it comes with Windows 11

Unless you're requirements are exactly the same, I wouldn't just grab a build designed for someone else, kinda defeats the purpose of a custom build and may not perform optimally for your requirements

Quick update:

Have tweaked my build and decided to go a little heavier on the GPU as this PC will be solely used for gaming and feel it may be better to get a better GPU and still a solid CPU, but just not the 7800X3D.

What are we saying

I've been researching a lot over the last 5 days or so and this is the build I have came to. Saw numerous tests between the 6800 XT and the 3080 and at 1440p, 6800XT comes up par in most games, except for Warzone where it actually seems to beat the 3080 by a decent margin. Seems to perform great specifically in CoD and Warzone, so I feel like it is a great choice for me, as this is what I will be playing 99% of the time.

What you think of this build?

Thanks in advance!

Honestly with gaming being the main focus the GPU is where I'd make savings to have the best CPU, the GPU is the component that gets changed the most so making a compromise with something that's likely to be changed in a couple years vs something that'll likely be in the build for the entirety of it's life cycle doesn't make sense to me

I'd 100% without question "sacrifice" on the GPU to get the 7800X3D personally it's a no brainer. Especially when I can still get a perfectly capable 1440p 144hz GPU to slot in there at the same budget

You're going for prettier frames right now at the cost of the builds longevity
