Wow, don't think I've seen such a scathing review from them even with regards to Asus.

They basically confirm it's a 1080p card, don't even attempt for 1440p

Nvidia absolutely determined to be scum of the earth and not let ASUS take some of their muddy grimy bottom of the barrell filth they want it all

A really great summary of why 8gb VRAM isn’t enough in some titles, and then some info on the fact that game devs have been frustrated for years on NVidia not increasing VRAM which has basically kept game development stagnant as they weren’t able to fully generate the graphics they wanted to.

Very interesting.

Just was watching the start on a Jayz video on this, they were basically going through saying how good the performance was, I was thinking this is a bit odd, I wonder if there’s been an issue. It was being presented by Phil though, it seems he created it as Jay has handed over ops for now as he's had major surgery and is home recovering.

Mid watching the video exits, and now when I go back into it, it’s saying it’s private. But you can still see it listed in my feed

And now Jay has just posted this on twitter….

And a lot of sarcasm from Linus

TLDR from all of these.

DON'T BUY THE CARD UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Basically, the 2 major limiting factors are:

1/. Half the memory bus at 128 bit memory interface. That's half of the 3060ti's 256 bit, and actually we have to go back as far as the GeForce 7650GS and GeForce 7600GT back in March 2006 when this low a bus was used at this tier of GPU. That's holding the card back.

2/. 8Gb VRAM. Even at 1080p in todays titles (and even some from a few years ago), there are several now that require up to 12Gb VRAM at 1080p to be able to play at full settings. There has literally never been a card at this tier that couldn't max out graphics settings under it's architecture. On this model, there are several games where you'll have to reduce settings as a brand new card. And that's accounting for now, give it 2 years, this card is going to be totally useless.

GameAverage VRAM use (GB)Peak VRAM use (GB)
Far Cry 65.76.2
Dying Light 25.96.2
Assassin's Creed Valhalla7.47.5
Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered8.08.2
Far Cry 6 (HD textures enabled)8.08.4
Doom Eternal7.58.2
Cyberpunk 20777.78.9
Resident Evil 48.99.1
Hogwarts Legacy9.710.1
The Last of Us Part 111.812.4

This card only makes sense at 1080p, BUT IT'S $400 (likely going to be far more in the UK), and it's supposed to be a 1440p tier card. Ie, NVidia messed up from the off, they're trying to claw it back by marketing it now as a 1080p card for ray tracing because they know it's nowhere near good enough for 1440p. There are far far better options from both AMD and even Intel at the 1080p level at hugely reduced cost.

There should only have been one model of 3060ti and that should be the 16Gb with 256 bit memory bus.

This is a HUGE cash grab by nVidia, don't be suckered into it.

If you're unsure of what VRAM limitations means for your gameplay, skip to 19:02 in the Hardware Unboxed video above, they show real time gameplay where it's running out of VRAM.

At best, even though you're playing at high settings, it won't have the room to load the texture files and so it looks like it's on low settings

At worst you get major stuttering and freezes making gameplay impossible.

It's worth saying that "1080p but awesome" is actually a much more sensible place for a xx60 Ti model to fall in Nvidia's lineup. The weird place of the 30 series where it was much more like the 3070 than the 3060 was stupid.

The fact that it can't even do that, that's really stupid. Totally impossible product, no one should buy it. AMD, please save us.

I just pray AMD come through and take the high road. I'm worrying about that though given how much they raised their pricing on the RX7900XT and XTX

This card is so bad that it actually pulls Intel into being the best option at 1080p, it's just insane.

The 3060Ti, at the time of release, could actually manage 4k to an entry level. It felt like an OK place in the lineup, although it was always expensive. It matched/beat the 2080 though. This is the expectation through the generation.

The 4060Ti should be trading blows with the 3080. The fact that it's trading blows with the 3060Ti is very telling. Nvidia really do need a proper shake up. If this is the way pricing is going then the performance needs to be far higher.

Every GPU is overpriced now IMO. We are paying it though, so why would they stop 🫣
