5600X RTX 3070 Build

Hi all,

First off, I didn't know this facility existed. If I did I would have posted up before I ordered. My order is in pre-production so i guess i have a couple of days to amend it if you guys come up with anything of deathly importance.

Secondly, I'm a console gamer moving onto PC for the first time.

Thirdly, I did put a phone call into PCS before ordering to discuss some things I wasn't sure about. However I would value your input also.

I have ordered a 1440p 144hz monitor with G-Sync. I have ordered a mouse & keyboard too also. There isn't really any more budget, but I could probably go another £100 or something like that. I will be using the PC for gaming primarily but also working from home and the usual boring grown up stuff. And yes, I am aware that for some games (red dead...) I will not be able to run on Ultra settings, this is a compromise with my budget that I have had to make.

That bad huh. This was £1850 including a monitor. Like I said I can maybe go another hundred or two BUT that is including the monitor.

Mouse & keyboard are already sorted so basically it's 2k for a PC and screen

This is what I’d be looking at, the storage is a bit bare bones but you can add more in later. Dropped the monitor altogether, you can pick up the Samsung G5 for around £300. It’s also Prime day on Amazon on Monday and Tuesday so there may be some bargains to be had there…

Do you think the lack of SSD will be prohibitive for load times etc? Or would you be storing games on the m.2 with the OS?

Also, is the RTX 3070 one of the cards with the Uber long lead time?

You’ll have room for a few games on the M.2, and you can shuffle them onto the HDD when you’re done with them, saves the hassle of downloading them all over again if you ever want to go back to them. The 3070 actually has quite a respectable lead time, unlike the mythical 3060Ti 👍

Ok that makes sense, and then upgrade to another m.2 in the future as funds allow if I wanted to.

If you have time please could you explain the differences in the CPU and GPU, and also the motherboard, from my spec to yours? I understand you have increased the speed of the RAM and that the increased power supply is needed for the parts you have picked but I'm not too up on the spec of all the parts.

The CPU upgrade is from the 3600 to the 5600X. The 5600X is the successor to the 3600, a generation later with approximately 20% improvements in performance. The GPU upgrade is from the 2060 to the 3070: the 2060 is a previous generation card designed for 1080p monitors; the 3070 is a current generation card designed for 1440p monitors. Basically, your original choices were somewhat outdated and aimed more at a lower tier of monitor than you have.

The RAM speed is because Ryzen processors, especially the 5000 generation but also the 3000 generation, like speedy RAM: 3200MHz is really the entry level.

The power supply needs upgrading for the 3070; it's worth going beyond what's needed, however: an over-specced PSU will last longer, be more efficient, run quieter and give you the opportunity to upgrade further in a few years time.

That's really helpful and makes a lot of sense. Thanks @AgentCooper and @sck451 for your help on this. I'll jump back on the configurator tomorrow and get my order changed. I guess I would have been disappointed with my original spec not being able to cope with 1440p.

Just to add, if anyone has an idea of current 3070 lead times please feel free to let me know... It's gonna feel like a lifetime waiting for my rig to turn up!

Thans @AgentCooper , I have amended my order in line with your suggested spec.

I have however swapped the 2TB HDD for a 1TB SSD as I have an external for storing photos etc on and I think I would value the speed of the SSD over the size of the HDD especially as I am likely to be moving games to the M.2 when I want to play them. Do you think this would make sense?

Maybe in a year or two I would consider adding an additional M.2 if I felt I needed more space.

Just as an aside here, has anyone got experience of using the Samsung G5 for office work? I have read some reviews that said the 1000R is unpleasant to use when not gaming. I have only ever used flat panels before. The other monitors I would consider are the ASUS TUF VG27WQ1B or the MSI Optix G27CQ4 which both have a shallower radius of 1500R.

A SATA SSD is pretty pointless. Just get a second M.2 drive now: they're so much faster and cost virtually the same.

For office work, I personally much prefer a flat monitor. I have the AOC Q27G2U and can't speak highly enough of it. The ASUS and MSI both look pretty good for the shallower curves, though.

The PCS M.2 is a great little drive for the price, I've got 2 of them in my desktop and one in the laptop

That's great, it was only £8 to change from an SSD to an M.2 so that was really worthwhile.

I re-jigged my order as per @AgentCooper suggested, and then made some adjustments to the storage, and since then have been sitting patiently in the queue for a 3070.

However since then I have been watching other people's orders and pictures of their new rigs, and I'm wondering...

If I'm spending all this money, should I choose a different case, maybe something with icue that looks awesome?

Interested to see if people have any thoughts or suggestions for my build.

I have changed my case to the Meshify C, I hope I don't word this wrong but I like the more subtle, classy look? Still a a fan of twinkles though!

Why is it that the liquid coolers look so awesome? Is there a good option for a liquid cooler for my build? I know it's not an overly powerful pc but I do want it to look good as well as be functional, and I really like the RGB liquid coolers! At this point, I'm not really bothered about the budget within reason. I did notice the Meshify C only comes with one front and one rear fan as standard, not sure if that makes a difference to what you would suggest?

The Meshify C is a great case. For cooling, one of the Corsair Capellix coolers -- probably the H100i -- would be the ideal if you want the bright lights! It's overkill for the 5600X, but that's not a problem except for the budget! If you're adding an AIO I'd probably want to move the rear exhaust fan to the front of the case instead -- you can either ask PCS to do that or do it yourself when the PC arrives: it's very easy.

Thanks for your advice @sck451 . Do you think PCS will mount the radiator in the top of the case or in the front? I presume they would mount it in the top with the fans working as an exhaust and then I would have the existing case fans both in the front pulling clean air in?

Apologies if I've got this all wrong - this is my first PC!

The Meshify C will support a 240mm radiator in the roof so as long as you’re not opting for RGB RAM they’re likely to top mount it.

Your assumption about intake and exhaust is correct… although ‘cool’ air is a bit more appropriate than ‘clean’ air 😜👍
