A base build...

Hi,

I have bought two laptops from PCS in the last year (one for leisure, one for work) and am looking to add a final (luxury) desktop.

I am in no rush to have anything magnificent as I have a 10-month old daughter who takes up a whole load of time and attention so the idea would be to upgrade the desktop in time so it can handle AAA games (where I can lock myself away for an hour or two to enjoy).

Budget is around 1000-1400£ and should hopefully be able to deal with anything you throw at it initially (At the minute I enjoy games such as Football Manager, Skylines, Company of Heroes). I have this monitor.

No desire to have a PS5 or Xbox so would like the PC to eventually play their role (if possible?)

And guidance/advice would be appreciated, as always.

Here's the build I'd suggest. the 2060 super is a great card and should be enough for your needs down the road, I've added a super fast M.2 for Windows and your main apps, a 512GB SSD for games and a 2TB for general storage. The 750W PSU should give a lot of room for upgrades in the future if you decide to do so. The wirelss card comes with WiFI and bluetooth for only a £1 more than the wifi version of the motherboard and the silver warranty is a no brainer for a fiver. Case is very much personal preference, if you'd like something more RGB it can be changed, but the 4000D is a very popular case here

Thank you for this, @JUNI0R - and sorry my reply is late.

Would it be an obvious benefit to upgrade to the AMD Ryzen 7 for an extra £100?

Everything I've seen says the opposite, albeit the 3060 doesn't massively outperform it

I’m going to take those benchmarks with a pinch of salt, especially the ones where a 6800 is beating a 3090. I’ve also seen the 3060 out performa the 1080ti. Either way, the 1080ti/2060s/3060 are all roughly the same performance (from what i have seen anyway), so it would come down entirely to price for me.

Apologies.

£1600 with the view to being able to upgrade in the future.
With your budget this build should provide great performance for your current monitor and allow you room to upgrade in the future.

The Corsair 4000D is a great case which provides ample airflow. If you're looking for some RGB then the 220T is a good choice and it has one more fan incuded but is a little small, so may limit future upgradabilty with super large graphics cards. The Ryzen 5 5600X is a great gaming CPU currently and the TUF B550 is a good pairing for it. 16GB of RAM is enough for the large majority of games these days and with only 2 DIM slots filled you could add another 16GB For a total of 32GB down the road if you see fit. For your current monitor, the 3060 will comfortably handle your current needs. For storage, I've given you a 500GB Gen 4 M.2 drive For Windows which will load it instantly, a 512GB SSD for your programs and games (I'd upgrade this to the 1TB version if you can spare another £43) and a 2TB HDD for general files. The RM850W is a great PSU and will comfortably handle the system today, it'll also leave ample room for upgrades down the line. I'd recommend getting a better cooler for the 5600X so have gone for a Cooler Master 240 AIO as it also technically adds to case fans. The Wireless card will give you 5.0 Ghz bandwith as well as Bluetooth for £1 more than the wifi version of the motherboard so is a great choice. The antivirus software has been known to cause issues so it's been removed and the Silver warranty is well worth the £5.

Jokes aside, I was originally gonna recommend the 220T, then realised the 4000D is probably better for airflow and future upgradability and it hit the £1600 mark bang on so I had to. Very proud of myself 😂

4000D is a fantastic case, but the 3070 is quite a snug fit in mine, so the 220T would be even worse for future big cards.

But in my opinion, they should have either added at least 3 fans or added none - 2 is a ridiculous number of fans

Totally agree with this, it's just an odd deadspot in the middle. If they included none then it would be a lot easier for customers to just choose their own fans based on ther budget, or with 3 it would've done a decent job with cooling... Where as 2 isn't adiquate for most of the builds that go in them so then you just have to work around them. If I were to get a PCS build with a 4000D I'd personally toss them out and replace them with a pack of LL fans 😂
