A New lease of life!

my old pc was an AMD Sempron 3400 skt 754 with 1Gb Kingston value ram, 160Gb HDD and ATI Radeon 512Mb X1650 Pro Agp graphics, an ANCIENT Phillips Dvd-Rw optical drive made in 2005, XP home 32 bit and 18 inch philips crap crt monitor, all running from a generic oem 400W psu! somehow it managed to play both doom 3 and Ghost Recon: modern warfare and F.e.a.r. just not at high settings.
So.... Here's the new beast being built for me at my request by the gods here at PCS. Please could you give an honest opinion as to what you think of my new mid-range life-maker, as it's going to become the most important thing in my life! I shall soon be playing the likes of Crysis, Far Cry 2, Modern Warfare 1 and 2, Orange box and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, amongst other FPS's. Shall also be enjoying blu-ray movies on the monitor in the spec below. so, here it is, plz be gentle with me, as this pc is like my dream :) :

Price: £927.00 including VAT and delivery.

It is slightly (£18.00) more than the build you put together but has a better processor, motherboard, hard drive and graphics card which will really make a difference. While you could get a soundcard it's really not necessary for gaming because the onboard HD sound is pretty good. I removed the HDMI cable because the Iiyama monitors come with a DVI cable which will let you connect the monitor to the PC (DVI is better than HDMI).

WOW!, I'm impressed with the spec! wish i'd posted this BEFORE i ordered!! Didn't know dvi was better than hdmi!! I configured using the home office AMD build, so can't change the mobo, and the ATI HD 5770 is the top ATI card on offer. I hear what you're saying about onboard sound. I want to output Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 over optical to my Yamaha surround amp and not sure on board has Dolby Digital out? Gonna drop the hdmi cable for sure. Thanx SO much for your valued opinion! You guys really know your stuff and i'm well impressed, and i'm an a+ cert tech head!

lol, like your style, but 2 weeks is long enuf to wait for my new soul mate! no way could i reset the clock and add more days to the palpitation inducing countdown! I love my new pc THAT MUCH, and it's not even been assembled yet!! That's what ordering a PCS pc does to you as you KNOW you're gettin the BEST ;-). 1 thing that i realy do want to clear up, for peace of mind and wallet, is that, for a true decoded Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 digital audio signal to be sent to my yamaha RX-V620RDS home theatre surround amp, via optical connection when watching DVD's, Blu-Ray and also for 5.1 enabled games, am i right in thinking that the on-board sound card on the mobo won't output a true 5.1 Dolby Digital signal, only Dolby Digital 2.1 (pro-logic), and i should therefore stick with the creative sound card option? (another bonus is that the creative X-Fi Titanium will also give me classic brown trouser audio moments when playing the F.E.A.R. games as well as the orange box games, coz of the EAX functionality ;-D)

If it's still in pre-production, you can change components with no admin fee, though if you need to change things that the configurator wont let you then you'll need to ring up to change them rather than do on the website I believe.

Ye this spec is way way way better imo, id seriously consider cancelling (or amending) and going for that spec.

If you amend now, you wont be charged admin fees, and you WONT go to the back of the queue again.

Thank you so much to all who have responded to my spec, i really appreciate it :). Unfortunately, I had to even drop my original spec as my budget dropped to £900, so i have dropped the HDMI cable and gone for a blu-ray rom drive and a dvd-rw drive. I know in total it saves only £3, but i'm on DLA and my wife is training to be an Occupational Therrapist at Bournemouth Uni, so don't get benefits, even tho i'm disabled with severe ADHD and PTSD, so money has never been tighter. If it weren't for an EXTREMELY generous family member who has watched me build and rebuild our pc's out of old, bargain basement obsolette parts for near 10 years, I wouldn't even be here, eagerly and exitedly awaiting what is, for me anyway, compared to what i'm used to, a top spec dream machine!! It can sometimes be too easy to go for the ultimate spec, which will get those extra 2 or 3 FPS in games etc. but TBH, the one i've ordered is going to blow me away with it's power and capability. That said, I do wish i had that £20-£30 extra to play with the spec you have graciously shown me, as i know it would be 10% more power in every aspect, like windows performance and raw 3D power! That said, this fantastic website, and utterly BRILLIANT forum members have enabled me to configure and have built, a pc that will serve our family, as i have two boys at 4 and 15 yrs old, for many many years to come, and is current and future proofed with plenty of upgrade potential! I will def keep the Phenom chip in mind as a future upgrade, aswell as the graphics card ;-) my Birthday's in feb ;-D. The only question that remains, and is driving me nuts, is: do i need the creative sound card? i need to be able to output a 5.1 Dolby Digital and 5.1 DTS signal over optical connection to my Yamaha surround amp but don't know if the on-board sound can do it? From what i can gather from many hours googling, is that to output a true 5.1 digital signal via optical cable, i would need the creative sound card as on-board sound cards only output a 2.1 digital signal. I REALLY REALLY REALLY NEED YOUR EXPERT ADVICE ON THIS, PLEEEEEEEEASE!! It's not just for the games, you see, but also for the Blu-Ray films and also DVD's I'll be watching on the awesome monitor. This pc really is going to be my complete entertainment box. The mrs can watch her soaps and slushy docu's using DKY and the main Toshiba widescreen tv while i'm blowing/shooting sh*t up, plus ogling over blu-ray movies 'n dvd's in the other room. HEAVEN ;-). Once again, i would seriously appreciate your respected advice, and thank you again for all that you have already done to help me. You are true unsung heroes. Regards and respect, Ben (Goatboy)

However, i'd ditch the Bluray drive, upgrade to the 1GB GTX 460, and wait for Amazon.co.uk Black Day or whatever it is, an offer is 50% of Sony Blu-ray drive, I will most likely be taking a close look at this :D

I should have mentioned as well that i do dable in the occasional bit of music production, using software like Reason, Rebirth, Recycle, Sony Acid pro, Ableton suite 8 and Cakewalk. I'm by no means a pro;-) Basicaly, I just want to be able to make the odd track, watch blu-ray/dvd's, enjoy my mp3 collection (ever growing and currently at 222gb spread over 2 hdd's), and play loads of games, all in glorious Dolby Digital 5.1, hence why I'm needing advice as to whether or not i am right to get the Creative X-Fi Titanium PCI-E sound card or not? Again, thanx for your advice and the spec you posted. I mean, if i don't need the sound card, then i could well call up the sales team and reconfigure to the type of spec both you and Phoenix have segested!! This is why advice on the sound card is imperitive to me, as i NEED to be able to output a 5.1 Dolby Digital/DTS signal over an optical connection, no matter if i'm playing a game, watching a film or listening to or making music. please can you advise me on this, as i respect and appreciate your experience and opinions greatly. Ben

even for mild music production, the onboard here is ample. Im running a 5.1 logitech speaker system that PCS kindly gave me on my ASUS Rampage 3 onboard sound.

I know that you get DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 using the speakers connected to the mobo like you have, but i'm needing to connect my pc to my Yamaha 5.1 cinema surround amp via an Optical cable and as far as i know, on board sound cards can't output a DIGITAL 5.1 signal, hence why i think i need the X-FI Titanium. just wanna be sure as i'm sacrificing cpu and graphics power for it, which i'm more than happy to do, as long as it's not a waste of time and money. god it's so confusing these days, what with the on-board capabilities of modern mobo's
