Adding RAM to a laptop

Hi there,

A simple question from a relative newbie to the pc game. I am purchasing a laptop and have chosen to have 2 x 8gb RAM. With the intention of adding to it in the future. The problem is that ideally need 64gb RAM. But having 2 x 8gb RAM (the only option at 16gb) I am left with 2 slots. Can I add 2 x 16gb RAM to a set of 2 x 8gb RAM or do they all have to be the same amount to work properly together? I would get the 2 x 16gb RAM with my laptop build but it would be out of my budget.

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance!

I would personally just replace the 8s with the 16s. Why so much RAM required though?

It's for when I'm working with big 3D scenes. My work PC has 32gb RAM and I still have problems. Yes your right I can always replace the 8s with 16s. Just a shame to loose money by doing that. It's not a big thing though, just something I'll more than likely to somewhere down the line. Cheers for the advice!

At one point you're going to have to take a hit on the price unfortunately. You CAN leave the 2x8gb sticks in there. There won't be too much of a performance hit but it will exist. It depends what you're doing as to whether you will notice it or not. The most important thing is matched pairs for the dual channel, having 2 individual matched pairs is an interesting concept :)
