Advice for 17'3" gaming laptop :)

Hey all,

I am currently looking for a new laptop and I've finally settled on getting it from PCSPECIALIST.
My issue however, is that I am not good with the configurations as I don't know much about hardware.

I want to be able to play all the games, I play pretty much every thing, and frequently.

My budget is 16000 DKK / 2150 € / 1925 £.

I'd looove some configuration advice for a great gaming laptop with the budget I have.

Thank you so much for the help, I can't wait to buy my new laptop 😍

It's often advised to have 2 different drives, one for OS & programs, one for storage. That way if you need to do a clean install of Windows you won't lose all your photos, documents etc. Of course, you can tailor storage to your requirements.

EDIT - I've just realised I'm thinking about this from a desktop PC perspective. I would've thought it's the same for laptops but am happy to be corrected if I've got it all wrong :)

It is the same for laptops.

There are several good reasons for having two drives, the main ones are....

1. Performance. Windows can only have one read/write operation in progress to each physical drive, so having two drives means that read/write operations from applications to user data do not impact the Windows and programs read/write operations on the system drive.

2. Cost-benefit. Windows and programs need to be on the fastest drive you can afford, because they get the most benefit from being on a fast drive. Windows and programs will load faster and feel snappier in operation when running from a very fast drive. User data doesn't need such blistering fast access times, you're unlikely to be able to see the difference between an access time of 5ms and one of 50ms with most data for example (and video and music files get zero benefit from the speed of an SSD). It's thus not worth the high cost of putting user data on a very fast drive. Even those user data types that do benefit from being on an SSD (high-res images, large spreadsheets and databases, etc.) don't need 5000MB/s M.2 NVMe drive read times, a cheaper SATA SSD doing 550MB/s will provide load times that are more than good enough. In most cases a 7200rpm HDD is plenty good enough, and especially where your user data is in small files (1MB or less) or is accessed in real-time (as music and video files are).

3. Ease of reinstallation. Having the user data on a different drive means that a clean reinstall of Windows does not touch your user data, although some important user data (browser bookmarks, for example) are stored on the system drive.

4. Backups are more logical. Because you can't access any files that are already open for exclusive access, as most Windows system files are whilst Windows is running, you can't use a simple file-by-file copy tool to backup the system drive. Instead you need to use an imaging tool (like Macrium Reflect free) to write an image of the system drive to a file (or files) on an external drive. User data on the other hand is best backed up by simple file-by-file copy tools, so having two separate drives makes configuring your back (and restore) tools much easier and more logical. It also means you can restore your Windows system and your user data independently of one another.

Okey so main ssd have to be only for windows and programs (including games?).
About RAM I know it’s better have two,but is for next years 16gb really enough? Almost every one building manual saying that.i am not sure..what you think guys ? Thank you very much for fast and very good answers !

Thank you so much for the advice. Suppose since no one else has a recommendation, it means that the vyper with these configurations is my best choice? :)

Small update. Thanks to @Nursemorph advice I am a step closer.
I've tried to change the configurations a little, since I already have a windows 10 license I can use.

Is this configuration with this chassis the best I can get for my money? Is there any red flags?
I just want to be 100% sure before I go ahead and buy this. I looked at the defiance too but unsure if the configuration adds up when it is around the same price point as this one.

Would love a bit more input before I just spend my money. Thank you so much :)

It's probably best that you don't start a new thread for this, it helps if everything stays in one place so the progression of ideas can be tracked.

@SpyderTracks, any chance you can work some magic and merge with the other thread, please?

I get that, but I thought I might have posted it wrong or something, as I saw others posting specs here instead :)

Not to worry, it just helps so you and others aren't typing the same thing multiple times and losing track of things. For what it's worth, that spec looks pretty good to me. But... I'm not the most educated on laptops so I'll step aside and let someone else take the lead on this for you. I don't want to be the guy who gives you terrible advice.

I would just save it for bags and cooler platforms, the extra RAM won't give you any benefit at all, will just never be used for gaming.

It won't come in handy in the future? I love heavily modded games 😁

Also thank you so much for the input.
Not 100% sure about cooler platforms is that like the one pcspecialist sells that the laptop can stand on? Would you recommend getting that one? :)

One idea would be to spend the extra cash on a faster SSD like the Samsung 970 Evo Plus for your primary drive which Windows will be installed on. The secondary drive is fine as a PCS one for storage. I'd also suggest getting the year dead pixel warranty as it doesn't cost too much, but that depends on how important that is to you.

Here's a configuration with those changes, including delivery to Denmark. Not sure how much that comes to in kroner.
