Advice for the Clueless - Gaming Desktop Specs

Hi all,

I'm finally at the point where I can afford to save up and buy a proper gaming desktop (and I've realised how much I need it having been locked inside for so long!), instead of making do with my old laptop (ASUS GL552VW; Intel core i5-6300HQ and GTX 960M). However, I'm not brilliantly clued up on all things PC so would appreciate some advice on what specs I should be looking at.

I'm basically after a high powered gaming desktop that can manage all the latest games at top (or very near top) specs for the next 6-8 years or so. So, I presumably need to be looking at the top CPUs and GPUs, but I'm not sure of exactly which ones are best (I've heard the Intel i7 is basically as good as the i9, for example). And then I'm clueless as to what level of cooling, or power, or other accessories I need to spec in for that.

Any help, please?

What's your max budget?

What monitor are you pairing it with, what resolution and refresh rate or make and model if you're unsure?

Is it just for gaming or anything else like streaming to youtube or something?

I was looking around £2500 - £3000, but happy to hang on and save longer if needed for a better set up.

I don't have a monitor yet. Was going to get the desktop first and then a suitable monitor to match. Happy to any suggestions for that too.

Just gaming. No streaming or fancy stuff.

Thanks for the help!
