Hi all,

I'd really appreciate your input on my proposed spec below. My primary purpose will be playing Football Manager 2012 where I like to play huge games loading as many leagues as possible (so I think a good CPU and lots of RAM is important?) I alos like playing strategy games such as Civilisation and whilst I will play games like CoD:MW these aren't my top priority so I think I can afford to compromise slightly on graphics?

I'd also appreciate your input on whether I should be going for a laptop or desktop. To be honest until a couple of weeks ago I'd been pretty much sold on the laptop route, given that I occassionally travel away from home with work etc I wanted to be able to take my laptop with me. That was until a couple of weeks ago when the graphics card on my Dell XPS M1730 burnt out and I was told that it would be difficult / impossible to replace or upgrade the graphics card essentially making my £2000 laptop worthless!!!! Am I right in thinking that going with a desktop solution will make it much more future proof and significantly easier to upgrade / replace components as and when they die or get outdated?

Budget is also an issue for me and to be honest I'd prefer to be spending less than the solution below, so if you can make suggestions of where I can remove cost I'd appreciate it!!!

Desktop computers are a lot better than laptops in terms of price and the ability to upgrade so if you have the room it's the best choice. You don't need an i7-2600 for Football manager, this would play all your games perfectly and is cheaper than the one you listed:

Thanks for the input. I thought I had seen a comment from somebody on this forum saying that the Intel i7 showed a significantly improved performance vs the i5 on Football Manager. I think he said he had been a tester for SEGA on Football Manager 11 or something?

The i7-2600 and i5-2500 perform incredibly similar in games with the 2500 even winning in some cases, you won't see much (if any) difference.

Would I be better going for an AMD processor? They seem cheaper than the Intel's? What are the pro's and con's

Thanks all for your help so far!

Not really, in a lot of games at 1920x1080 you won't always see too much difference between the 2500 and say 965 however when a game is more CPU bound(Dawn of War 2, GTA IV) than GPU bound (Battlefield 3, Just cause 2, Dirt 3) bound the 2500 does begin to do quite a bit better. It's also quicker in most other applications.
