advice please video editing laptop

Hi everyone,newbie here! :surrender:
i'm looking to get a laptop for video editing HD footage from my Panasonic camcorder.
I have been reading for about 4 weeks solid now and 'think' I have picked the correct components for my custom laptop.I really wanted to keep budget at £800 but it sneaked up to £1000! so if we can cut it back a little without too much compromise that would be great.

There are two review Optimus (Optimi?) for £749 and £799. Checked them out?

Otherwise...
1. Get 16Gb RAM if it's for video editing
2. Get the scorpio black hard drive
3. Get the arctic thermal paste

thanks SlimCini for your answers, i will check them out
anyone else got any views, before i take the plunge? cam RAM be increased easily later?

Advice given is pretty comprehensive. The drives in the review Optimus aren't great, V300 has known performance issues and 5400rpm hdd is not ideal for video editing but ultimately these like the ram can be changed at a later date if required, I would also upgrade to silver warranty which I believe can be done after purchase of a review machine. Only thing I would add is if you get near the £1k mark I would think you should be in Optimus not Cosmos territory IMHO - reflected in the saving you are getting on the review Optimus.

Edit : is this just for video editing and on what software?

Hi Edd1e
yes, mainly video editing.
I've never played a computer game in my life!
software?? well i don't really know, my Panasonic camcorder came with a HD editing suite but reviews are not great.
Any advice would be greatley recieved.
are there any dedicated forums you could recomend for editing?
thank you

Is this spec. better and a better chassis for video work, or is it overkill in the graphics card and i'm wasting money i could spend somewhere else?
any advice welcome. thanks readers.

The above spec would be a very nice computer for you. In terms of the GPU it is hard to say of it is over kill. Some lower level prosumer packages or OS bundled options only use cpu where as nearly all professional options such as Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Avid etc Al use it as part of their hardware accelleration performance. There are mid-week options such as Adobe elements or Avid Pinnacle which are a good half way house offering stripped back pro packages with the benefit of being built and enveloped by the big boys. I would suggest you look at these as a jumping off point or if you want to try something for free then Lightworks is a pro package available for no charge. The interface is a bit fiddly but you are going to have to learn something so if you start out with it then you are at no disadvantage. All the above use GPU acceleration so a dedicated GPU is advised. Which really depends on budget as the three models, Cosmos, optimus and defiance represent different price points.

Lastly I would still not recommend a 5400rpm drive as your second media drive if you are spec'ing rather tan a review option. 7200rpm or SSD.

Plenty of info an hardware requirements and helpful forums for all the Adobe, Avid and Lightworks options for you to research further.
