AMD 7970M Graphic Issues

Hi all,

I've had my laptop now with the 7970m for almost 2 years, and since day 1 I've been having on going problems with the graphics in the game, which is thanks to AMD's amazing Enduro drivers. I did post previously on this, found here: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?22378-ATI-7970M-Driver-Issues, but I managed to find some drivers that were bearable and just gave up hope and waited for AMD to fix this, but it's been over a year now and still we are no closer to a solution.

There was also another thread here, https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...cs-Drivers-Installation-Guide&highlight=7970m, but I'm still experiencing issues and so are a number of other people I can see.

I've done a lot of research and can see the issue essentially comes down to the drivers that Enduro uses, but in every thread I've look at, they all mention the underutilization issue and no one actually mentions anything about the issues I experience.

These are the specific issues that I experience in World of Warcraft, most other games are fine, or at least not too noticeable.

When my laptop is plugged in, everything is fine, my FPS is great and it all looks amazing on Ultra with a stable FPS even in raids. But, as soon as the cable comes out, I then get flashing black dots all over the screen and my FPS drops (because it diverts back to the onboard graphics when it's not plugged in). I recently installed the latest beta drivers, and now even plugging the cable back into the laptop it doesn't make the dots disappear and I have to restart my entire client for it to go back to running smoothly.

I've tried numerous different AMD drivers, done a complete reinstall of windows and formatted my drives but still nothing so I believe the issue is with the drivers themselves. But because no one mentions this specific issue, it's proving difficult to find a reasonable explanation or workaround as they only talk about FPS drops.

Does anyone else here have a 7970m that experiences this problem, or has at least heard of it?

Hello IR

If you go into the power management setting of the laptop you should be able to specify what happens with the power management when you disconnect the mains supply.

Im not at my laptop at the moment so i cannot advise you on the process but if you right click on the battery icon in the task bar you should be able to see options for On Mains and On Battery, may say On battery Long Life Span or something and change it to high performance and hopefully that may solve the problem.

Hope this helps but let me know how you get on, i can provide better instruction when i get home.

Hi SDK,

I actually saw an option for that a few days ago in the CCC I believe, about what to do when it's unplugged, and I switched it to Maximize Performance but still getting the same thing. I'm at work at the moment so just going by memory but it was a setting for the laptop to decide what to do with the graphics when it's not plugged in.

Perhaps the laptop is overiding the option your giving CCC with its own in the battery option. I'll have a look tonight and post up where you can find it. Hoping that is the problem.

Ok, so just a quick update.

I downloaded the 13.8 AMD drivers, as I recall them being the most stable. Uninstalled the AMD Drivers using Driver Sweeper, rebooted, went to install the drivers, when I realised the one's I downloaded were the desktop one's. But, I couldn't find the mobility drivers anywhere, in fact, I couldn't find ANY pre-dated Mobility drivers for this card. Every single link I went to that re-directed to the AMD Driver page, said it was no longer available.

So, I downloaded the updated drivers for the Intel HD 4000 Series, and also the latest 7970M driver (Which is 14.4).
Cleaned the machine again, rebooted, installed the drivers, no problems.

Went on WoW last night, and it honestly looked very promising. No stuttering, reaching 140 FPS when I was idle in the game, no problems. Unplugged the power cable, and the black dots didn't appear again, minimized the game, and again, no black dots. I was feeling very hopeful, then all of a sudden, they appeared, this time it appeared to be random. I have no idea what caused it, it may be a heating issue, but not sure, will have to try it again tonight and monitor.

TL;DR Updated to AMD 14.4 for Mobility, and latest Intel HD 4000 Drivers and seems to be smooth so far.
