AMD - Check my Spec

Heh everyone,
Been about 5 years since I last did this, my 2017 machine lasted a good while as my gaming platform but it's time to refresh those pixels and you lovely lot did a cracking job checking my last spec (though my forum account sems to have gone missing) that it'd be rude not to go for round 2...

Budget = £2500
Role = Gaming - Looking to play Baldur's Gate 3 / Starfield / Star Wars: Outlaws / Skyrim 6 and so on at 4K resolution
Monitors = Currently running AOC 2778x (2560x1440) + Samsung LF24T350FHRXXU (1920x1080)

Additional = I have a good 8TB drive that I'll be transferring from my current rig to the new, which I use to backup all my data so don't need a large storage drive. I'll also transfer out my audio card (SB Audigy FX) so that saves on that. My monitors have served me well, playing at 2K but I'll need to replace the 1080p with a 4K so am also looking for recommendations on that front, to use my 2k as my second screen.

I'm looking for a rig that will last me another 5 years (hopefully) playing RPG / Action / Adventure games at high resolution, smoothly & quickly...

The current crop of games suggest for 4K games:
CPU = Ryzen 7 2700x to 5800x
GPU = RX 6800XT to RX 7900XT
Mem = 32GB

So I figured the following should allow me to play the next and maybe even subsequent generation at high spec too. I can always pop in another 32GB memory in 2-3 years if that is needed. I'll be looking to buy in early September, If I can keep my hands in my pockets and away from the 'BUY NOW' button. I went team red as their kit seems to outpace / be better value currently, though my last two rigs were team blue...

Case wise, I'm not a big RGB person as I have my current rig under the desk but 200mm off the floor and looking to continue like that so I went with the Meshify 2 as it seemed to have good airflow. The CORSAIR iCUE 4000X looks fine too though and it seems hard to find something to fit the GPU sizes these days.

If you’re not buying until September I would definitely recommend pressing pause for now. A lot can happen in the market between now and then, with new products changing pricing, and GPU prices generally falling.

What I would say for now is that your primary display is not really suitable for gaming, as it’s a 60hz TN panel. For a behemoth GPU like the 7900XTX you would want to match it with a higher tier display to make the most of it, such as a 1440p Ultrawide, Superwide, or making the step up to 4K. You’ll want something with a 120+ refresh rate as well as there’s a substantial, noticeable improvement at that speed. Putting the XTX with your current display is like buying a Ferrari and only driving it on 30mph roads, it looks great and might make you feel great but you could do the same job with something substantially cheaper.
Summer is a great time to get a monitor upgrade, as a lot of new products launch which push down the prices of existing, and still very capable, displays. There are also a few sales such as Amazon Prime Day which should happen in the next few weeks.

Edit: reread your thread and seen you’re already planning to get a 4K monitor, great stuff, what sort of budget do you have in mind for the monitor and PC together?

Thanks for the input - I was probably going to go £2800 all in, so hopefully the prices for the rig can drop enough for a reasonable 4K monitor. Either that or I re-spec the whole thing down to 1440p and use the savings to get a great monitor to match that level.

Had a look around and in the current climate, I'm probably going to go 2K instead of 4K, can't really justify the added £500+ after just having to pay out £250 excess on an insurance claim...

So I've rejiggled the spec down to £2000 and I'll be able to pair that with a great QHD 34" ultrawide 144Hz monitor such as:

As above, there's no point speccing something now as it will be completely different come September when there's likely to be different cases and almost certainly new motherboards and hopefully even ATX 3 PSUs. Prices will all have changed also so what we'd spec now won't be similar to what we'd spec then.

Firstly, a thank you for your time and expertise here. I know I speak for everyone you've helped when I say that.

I originally said last month that I was planning to get my new rig in September, well Larian studios brought Baldur's Gate 3 forward by 2 weeks & I was able to get a cracking deal on a 0% card so who am I to look those gift horses in the mouth... I also took the plunge on Diablo 4 & look forward to cranking everything up to 11...

Basics:

Budget = Around £2500 but flexible
Role = Roleplay / Openworld gaming (BG3 / Starfield / SW: Outlaws / Skyrim 6)
Monitors = Samsung Odyssey G5 LC34G55 (3440x1440) & AOC Q2778VQE (2560x1440)
Storage = I have an 8TB drive that I'll transfer from my current rig as backup
Audio = I'll also transfer out my SB Audigy FX to use with my 5.1 speakers as they're still fine.

Thoughts - I swapped to the Corsair 5000D airflow case as that had cracking reviews. I figured that after watching and reading reports and layouts, having the CPU radiator on the side as an intake, along with 3x120 on the front coupled with 3x120 on the top and the rear single fan would provide more than enough airflow & positive pressure to keep the 7900X and 7900XT cool & system clean. The case will be under the desk so RGB isn't a factor for me but it'll be high enough off the floor to keep infiltration to a minimum.

I went with the 850W PSU so there's room to add 32GB RAM down the line or would you think 750W is enough?

My main blind spot is the motherboard - even after looking at reviews, I can't really find much of a muchness between them all, aside from the X670 having PCI 5.0. Is this going to be a factor in this build?

I took your advice and upgraded my monitor to 34" ultra-wide - Arrived yesterday & it's taking some getting used to, even on medium/low settings but looking forward to seeing what the new setup can handle.

I'm ready to order now or in the next week or so, depending on your recommendations here.

I would suggest that the advice previously with the X3D chip still applies. The build suggested was right in the wheel house. The 7900XT is a fair shout though

That's my bad - I even made a note to go for the 7800X3D after checking out the LTT review of it but it went straight out of my head but that's swapped out now. That also drops my power consumption by 30W so I'll drop the PSU to 750W as well, as I have 150W+ spare.

I wouldn't recommend lowering the PSU. Especially with your higher end aspirations on the GPU. Don't rely on any calculators for this information. You need to do the maths yourself with the maximum power consumption rather than the TDP ratings that the calculators use.

850w would be the absolute minimum. 1000w is my minimum recommendation these days though, no point in middling when there's next to no financial difference.

The previous build had a better motherboard etc as well. It's just a better thought out build overall. I know you may not be seeing the differences but those in the know will. If you want to make changes I would start from that build using the link, rather than using yours to tweak.

Post up where you're at with the build now and we can check if there's anything else to switch out.

But, from everything I've read, the 7900XT isn't great value when compared to the earlier versions but it is on average 35% better than the 6800 XT. Seeing as I have the funds for it and I'm looking to not touch this rig for 5 years, it makes more sense to me to go for the 7900XT. If im missing something or you can see a falacy in my logic, let me know.

(Also the 990 is only £14 more than the 980) I went with 1TB as as it's only £35 more than the 500GB.

My current game will always be installed on the boot drive. Is there something I'm missing for upgrading the 2nd drive to an SSD?

Changed things around a little for your storage. I've also proposed the 6950XT as the value with it right now is phenomenal. The 7900XT only makes sense for 4K and for when you don't care about the money.

The rest is the way I would recommend things. The Cooler is overkill for your uses but it will look good being a 360mm rad, so will fill the space better than the other offerings.

RGB Ram, why not, 1000W PSU..... it's what I recommend, storage in line with what we would suggest (Small OS/Programs drive with a second games & fast storage drive. Conventional storage there for bulk space, docs etc).

You don't need any extra fans, they're a waste of money. The case comes with a few and the AIO adds a further 3. That's more than enough.

OK, Looks good Thanks - I've found some images of builds where the H150i fits to the front slots so I could use that as the intake to keep the CPU cooler with the two fans the case comes with at the back & rear top spot to draw the air the GPU puts out up & out. Remove the MB shroud to ensure that it gets its fair share of the breeze too. Though that would increase the ambient in the rig itself and the GPU is the main point of a gaming rig so would it make a difference to it that much?

Having it as the exhaust would create negative pressure and draw unwanted air in through all the cracks/crevasses no?

If you want some RGB lovliness then the 5000X would have you covered? It would have 3 RGB fans in the front? The AIO would be used as the exhaust in this case. The intake fans would typically run a little faster than the AIO fans, thus creating a slightly positive pressure (preferred during normal use) with a slight vacuum during hard use (preferred).

With the build as it is now, the AIO as the intake with the other 2 fans as exhaust would be preferred. They would still likely overpower the AIO until it started working harder.

Regardless of selection, you won't need to do anything with the mainboard shield. The builds will be fine as is.

Hmmmmmmmm - I’m not particularly one for RGB and with it being under the desk it’ll probably be wasted but it does look good… Thank you for your help with all this - I’ll take some time to mull it over and place the order on Thursday. I’ll update with a photo when she’s home.
