Annoying xbox controller problem

I'm using an Afterglow Xbox controller on my laptop whilst playing gta 5 which works fine but I have this annoying issue where sometimes the controller won't work and then when I unplugged and plug it back in it switches to player two which is why is not being recognized. Sometimes this happens when the game first loads and other times it'll happen when for example if I go into rockstar editor then back into story mode it'll switch to player two.

I've looked on Google and can't find any fixes to the issue and nothing but a game restart fixes it. I have one time managed to go into the gamepad settings and clicked calibrate and then tried restoring defaults then after unplugging and plugging back in the controller it switched back to player one but haven't managed to use that fix since.

Anyone know how to fix this?

It may be an issue with windows automatically installed drivers. There's been a lot of reports that Windows installs a generic driver instead of a the right driver and this causes it to randomly connect and disconnect.

1. Go to device manager
2. Find your controller in the list
3. Does it have a yellow exclamation mark? If yes right click it and click "Update Driver Software"
4. Choose" Browse My Computer"
5. Select "Let Me Pick Form A List ..."
6. You will get a list come up and if it is this issue then the one selected may be "Microsoft Common Controller for Class" or something like that, this is the wrong driver.
7. Scroll to the bottom and find "Xbox 360 Peripherals" Click it and select next.
8. Choose the latest version of "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" and click next and yes to confirm.

If it is the driver issue that's been reported a lot lately then this should fix it (it used to happen in Win7 occasionally, but in 8.1 and 10 it's been reported a lot more), if it's not then I have no idea.

Nope only seems to happen with gta 5 and nothing in device manager tells me it's a driver issue. My bet is that it's a mod conflict I have installed on gta 5 or something just not sure what one none of them change the input at all so it's not obvious. Only thing I can think off. As soon as I close gta 5 and unplug and reconnect the controller it switches to player 1 again so gotta be to do with gta 5.

If you think it may be a mod conflict, try removing all your mods and testing, if it works then add one mod and test again, going through all your mods, eventually you will find the one that's causing the issue.
