Ok so go easy on me here but I am a regular user of Supermicro servers but find the suppliers in the UK hard to deal with and with long waiting times for motherboards and cases etc.

I resell servers as part of projects for CCTV and favour AMD EPYC processors.

I will be using the 2 NVMe 500gb drives mirrored for the Server OS and then a couple of 10tb WD Gold drives for the VMs and data. Can't see the drives I want so not shown on spec but would buy separately.

Just wondered what everyone thinks to this spec.

Maximum of 2 VMs running. One a DC/Files server and the other the CCTV VMS (not recording video just managing the CCTV streams and alarm events etc).

How many concurrent streams are you running on the CCTV virtual machine? Does that require a lot of RAM?

The build itself looks rather nice, the only thing that leaps out at me (although I'm not familiar with the specifics of the types of loads the CCTV streams would create) is the passive processor cooler, I know it's an option, but it's just ringing alarm bells in me.

Hi, probably no more than 50 streams at any one time passing through the server which sounds a lot but h.265 streams are very efficient bandwidth wise. Didn't have any option available for the cooling on the build.

In that case yeah, makes sense. I would definitely get one of the PCS guys advice on this, they’re a lot more knowledgeable with this level of build.

Hey @SpyderTracks @AgentCooper! You called :p

@stephengd80 I like the build. EPYC is the way to go for video compression, rather than dual Silver Xeon. Benchmarks on the video compression SPEC17 benchmark attached for EPYC vs Xeon. Regards RAM, I'd say to switch to Quad channel, it'll benefit the Infinity Fabric on this platform.

You've found a mistake in our compatibility check! This board only has a single M.2 slot, so we wouldn't be able to RAID these. I'd suggest a couple of U.2 drives in RAID would do the job if RAID 1 on the boot drive is a must. Otherwise, can you drop one of the M.2 drives out of the build. I've fixed this system error now.

Please note that these U.2 drives would take up two slots on the front.

The only other thing to mention is that the EPYC chips are really hard to get at the moment, realistically, you're sadly going to be looking at a couple of months as an estimate right now, but this is only estimated from recent buys of these chips.

Hi

A couple of U.2 drives on the front would be fine as it leaves a couple of bays to mirror 2 X 10tb SATA drives for a couple of VMs and Data.

The EPYC 7272 chips are showing as estimated 1/8/21 is this not correct? It's a shame if they are on a long back order as may have to go with Intel Xeon even though I really don't want to.

Yep, U.2s would give you 2 free 3.5" front bays for HDDs.

To be transparent, lead time on EPYCs are pretty poor at the moment, so Intel might be the way forward if this lead time doesn't fit in with your procurement requirements.

Feel free to PM and I'll have a look at the Intel chassis that you think would suit you and I'll check the ASUS hub and our stock for inventory.

Oh, forgot to say that I need to update the EPYC chip lead times. It's a manual process to override so I'll do this tomorrow.
