Hi Gents

Will I be able to get 5.1 audio from the onboard audio from my mobo when using optical to my Logitech Z906?

The mobo is ASUS® Z87-A: ATX, USB2.0, USB3.0, SATA6GB/S, SLi, XFIRE.

I read on another forum that without DDL I won't get proper 5.1 because games aren't usually encoded into a compressed audio format, meaning ill only get stereo.

Another forum said it doesn't matter so im not sure who to believe.

I dont mind adding a sound card, my build hasn't started yet. But as I plan to use optical I didn't think it would be needed.

if you use the onboard audio to your sound system via optical cable you will get Dolby digital 5.1 whn you are watching dvd's because the 5.1 is already on the disk. But you will not get DD 5.1 in games.

if you get a high end sound card you can get dd 5.1 in games via optical. Asus DX pcie is a good card for this Or the fancy creative soundblaster cards - although i dont know if they are very good - never used them for 5.1

OR you could get a lower end sound card and get pro logic II 5.1 - which is 5.1 but not anywhere near as good as DD.

Personally, i think you may as well get a high end soundcard if you already have the digital speaker system.

Thanks for the quick reply and recommendation.

If I use the analogue audio outputs will I then get 5.1?

Im not to bothered on if its DD or not, its compressed either way. I just want great sounding 5.1 in my games.

Considering you got a very nice set of speakers I'd go with Tom's suggestion and get a soundcard.

ASUS DX PCI-E card mate, i dont think PCS sell it, so you may have to buy elsewhere.

OR go for the Soundblaster Z cards from PCS - this would be the easier option .
