Fantastic PC, does everything I want. However, recently I have started to smell what can only be described as a cigarette burning next to my face. At first I thought it was my new leather gaming chair, but wasn't convinced.

Last week I gave it a huge dusting in the back garden (admittedly it's 1st one), and as you can imagine the floor was covered in dust balls. I'm sure I got most of the dust out anyway.

The smell is still lingering, the PC is still working fine, no errors, games play fine, no problem. But just now it screamed several VERY LOUD high-pitched beeps at me. I wasn't sure where it came from, but guessing the motherboard.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone finds this familiar? Happy for advice!

I'm also thinking on a new PC, switching to AMD after reading the forums regarding Intel v AMD. I' appreciate if anyone could put a quote together, £1,600 - £2,000 budget, better than this current system of course, and the possibility of upgrading RAM / M.2 drives in the future.

Massive thanks for any help!

Jason.

I wouldn't upgrade that PC, it's got plenty of life left in it, there's be no benefit to swapping it out for several years yet.

With the beeps, what order were they? Usually it's short and long beeps or some combination of that. They tell you what the error is related to.

First things first, install HWMonitor and check thermals when on idle and under load and post the results:

Thanks for the speedy reply!

About 10 beeps, very loud, all the same length.

Idle result attached.

Thank you!

And this is after 10 minutes into AC Odyssey.
Is that actually while playing the game or did you end the game and then take the readings?

Rather than doing a report can you just take a screenshot of the HWMonitor window with the CPU details expanded and GPU also whilst the game is running?

Hi, yes game running in the background.
Temps seem fine which is good.

There are no beep codes with 10 beeps, it's possible it was 2 groups one after the other, the longest asus beep code is 1 long followed by 4 short.

But without knowing exactly what the sequence was it's impossible to say I'm afraid.

Judging by the healthy cooling, I'd say either PSU or motherboard issue perhaps, but that's complete guesswork.

Ok thanks for looking, much appreciated. I'm only guessing at the amount of beeps as it took my by complete surprise! You reckon the smell could be PSU on its way out...?

It could be anything, it could be just burning dust, could be some component burning out, it's impossible to say unfortunately.

Hi, just an update:

Dived into the case again today, checked everything plugged in, no loose connections, etc, and so far so good. Perhaps a slightly loose plug somewhere on the MB or something, not sure.

Anyway, fingers crossed, looks ok so far. Thank you again for your assistance!

Jason.
