Guess I've never introduced myself

I'm Stevey from N. Ireland. I'm a logistics & procurement specialist who likes computers, books, movies, games & music. Former community moderator for a AAA gaming company, got a reputation as a helpful PC guy around the forums and they asked me to come on board before the release of their new game when they split off from their previous publisher. I used to try and replicate peoples issues on the PC version of their game then try to fix the problems and walk them through how do it themselves.

They shut those forums down and I've been out of the forum game for a good few years, came across this forum when I bought my new computer and found out it's actually a really nice little corner of the internet and decided to stick around.

Can I ask which games forum you were on? Sounds pretty impressive.

Welcome along, although I am Stephen in most part of the world, most of my friends in Scotland call me Stevey, it sounds good with their accent.

Cheers for the welcome lads and to answer a couple questions

I like all types of music and by all types I literally mean everything, my girlfriend usually enjoys a laugh putting my liked songs on shuffle as you really don't know what going to come on. Right now I'm on a bit of a prog rock, metal heavy metal trip but it wouldn't be out of place to hear me blasting Dua Lipa or jaming out to some James Brown.

Movies again I'll watch anything that shot well, I've a thing for cinematography a music in scenes. I think David Lynch is a master in these areas. Horror is definitely my favourite genre and I love terrible films

Books I like anything strange, love things that leave me baffled and stick with me for days. Anything mysterious or sinister vibe always gets huge thumbs up from me but again I'll read anything. Just finished reading the Dune books for the first time and now I'm re-reading King In Yellow

As for moderation I was a moderator for Respawn Entertainment. I got a name for myself when they were Infinity Ward during the COD4 and MW2 days but especially MW2. The PC version was a bit of a mess and got into a pretty good cycle of breaking the game and fixing it again so I was able to help.

So when the heart of Infinity Ward left and reformed as Respawn Entertainment me and everyone else it seemed from the IW forums followed them to the Respawn Forums. After about a year of posting there and about 3-4months before the release of Titanfall I was brought on as a community moderator.

Unfortunately that came to an end when Titanfall 2 released as they moved their forums to EA's system and most of us old heads didn't like the set up the forums so we drifted away. I helped run a community event every Tuesday called Titanfall Tuesday for over a year after Titanfall 2 released though so that was fun.

Ditto for the music, having the Ramones sandwiched between a couple of opera arias is interesting.

Was lucky to see James Brown's on his final tour. Great performer and had a lot of respect for him, he accepted his age and did not try to act like a young man but the stuff he could still do well he did and was superb.

My sister saw Alice Cooper and said he was the same, a great showman but accepted his age.

I've always wondered about direction. People always presume that everyone around them is like minded, mostly because like minded people collaborate in like minded things (PCS Forum for example). I always note how much in common I have with people on forums etc, but then I realise that's because we have common interests which stands to reason there would be other common interests outside the specifics of the forum. I always think that's the reason why some people tend to assume that everyone is the same, rather than realising it's little pockets of people with similar interests that end up drawn to each other.

I love music, very eclectic taste also and I simply like what I like. I'm not big on bands, groups, albums or anything/one in particular, I just like songs..... by the 1000s. I like it or I don't and it makes no odds what name is on the cover.

I love movies, horror is my favourite genre also as I'm very calm and calculated in life, I like to be prised out of my comfort zone and the big screen is an excellent way to do this.

A few members are into homebrew, myself included. Petrol heads, musicians, producers.... you name the hobby... it's here in spades.

Then we obviously have computing as well.

Yeah I always find it fascinating how similar people are especially on forums. Learning how each of us are different though is probably the reason I like forums more than pretty much any other social platform, you can get to know people on forums in a much more succinct way than any other platform I find. Probably the reason why I always gravitate towards them

We're all similar but categorically different in sometimes drastic ways. It's a brilliant platform for exposure to things you may have never even known existed plus the little insights into peoples lives/lifestyles really give you an idea of who they are.

Twitter/Facebook/Instagram always felt like a front that someone wants to show people to me, you never really get to know people or it's just a platform to share stupid things with your mates. I've always gotten something different from forums most often motivation to try new things

To me the likes of Twitbook, Facer and all the anti-social media sites are the zenith of celebrity culture, just there for people to show off and become "famous" for exposing themselves in public or saying words like bottom before the watershed on BBC.

Fora like this are good for me because I can easily imagine being sat in a pub or cafe chatting with everyone on here.

I am an enormous Alice Cooper fan, would have loved to have seen him live. Always a spectacle

Alice Cooper had a place in Fremantle and did a local radio show for a while, some of my family have seen him out and about. Said he is not that recognisable off stage so can lead a fairly normal life when he wants.

The area he has a house is interesting as it is now the most expensive real estate in Freo but was not always that way. When convicts who had been transported had done there time some, possibly all, were told they could return to England but had to pay their ticket, or they were given some land to start their new life. That land was by the river which is now the most prosperous part of the town.

John who owns the Station in Larbert is a Malt lover and there are easily 300 different Whiskeys in the bar.

Can be a bit pricey though, one is £75 a dram, although cheap compared to the Gleneagles price for the same, £235. John does not get many dumb American golfers in though, so probably would not get away with that price.

I completely agree with what's been said above about these fora; I really do feel like I can just be myself and not have to put on any sort of 'mask' like I do with other forms of social media, especially when engaging with friends and family.

It's fantastic how we can all share this passion for tech, and yet have such contrasting opinions on other topics; including music, film and sport. Even age and experience, where we have many members who have been working for, with or around the PC industry for many years we have people like me at the other end of the spectrum who have only really caught the tech bug since the start of lockdown.

Ultimately though, these fora are a place where we can just be ourselves and share our passion for this industry, and I'm very glad that we can share this space with you Stevey.

I love that the forum has different strands. Bit burnt out by the tech talk? Go and have a look at the 'One-Liners' thread. Been busy speccing up a system for someone and need some ideas what to have for your tea? Hop on over to 'Food Discussion'.

I thought I'd be on the forum for a week or so whilst I nailed down aspects of my own system. Eight months later I'm wielding a ban-hammer and having a laugh with you nutjobs every day. It's the community spirit that keeps me coming back.
