Blender Rendering and Fusion 360 Modelling PC

I am looking to upgrade Blender Rendering speed in particular, but also potentially migrate my Fusion 360 modelling from a Mac M1 (which works quite well) onto a Desktop PC if it is a lot faster - as I believe Blender Cycles Rendering needs a powerful graphics card.
I would also like to try out Postshot 3d modelling from videos.

Will probably make it dual boot as I understand Blender Rendering is faster on Linux - which is why I added a 2nd SSD.

I would like the pc to be as quiet as possible when it is not busy rendering.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I was looking to spend around £1.5k - but adding things such as silent cases and PSUs etc has pushed the price up to about £1,700

To be honest, most systems can be tailored so that they are near silent when idling...putting high end components into a silent case and then pushing them hard results in a significant amount of noise and restricts the airflow to them.

To keep that CPU and get the rest of the system to where it needs to be to support it< i've need to lower the GPU to the 4060Ti and it still edges the budget up to £1800. I am not an expert so it will need a second opinion:

Thanks for the suggestion - my main reason for the PC is Blender render speed and I am pretty keen to get at least a 4070 - as I am expecting it to render at least 20x faster than the Mac M1. I suppose if the price is starting to push £2k for a quiet Fast PC maybe I should go the whole hog a go up to about £2.5k and get a 4090 - which I am hoping could be as much as 50x faster if the blender benchmarks are correct.
Or alternatively get a noisy 4070 for around £1.5k
or indeed I wonder if it would be practical to build a server with 2x 4070s - as I think that could get close to a 4090 for less cost for the GPUs

You're definitely looking at £2.5k for a sensible build for your uses. £1.5k just isn't realistic and would be hamstrung left right and centre if you went down that route. Unfortunately shoehorning in a CPU & GPU to a budget while all else is under-par leads to a poor system overall.

Below has the main build where I would want it. The level of GPU is obviously budget related but I would want the Ti Super in there for the 16gb of vRAM. The 4090 is the obvious choice for being a monster but the next generation cards are due out pretty soon so I don't think there's value, the next generation 5080 will likely wipe the floor with the 4090 for far less money.

Dual GPUs is a fair shout but you need to consider power usage at that level. Regardless, if you have eyes on a top tier card down the line.... or dual GPUs.... you'll need the power. The 1200w shift is just about getting you there for dual cards, I would want a little more personally, but it will cover top tier with no problems.

Thanks for the comments so far - didn't realise how complicated PC purchase had got - lack of choice makes Mac buying so much easier!

My current thoughts is that I would like to build the lowest cost sensible system based on 4070 Super's (which seem to have a good cost/performance ratio based on Blender Benchmarks) and a Ryzen 7 9700X - which seems to have good single threaded cost/performance ratios based on Passmark Benchmarks.

I am expecting this to give me render speeds at least 24x faster than my current Mac M1 setup - based on comparing Blender benchmarks, plus also good Blender / Fusion 360 modelling performance if I decide to switch the modelling over from the Mac (which currently works quite well even for very complicate F360 models).

I would like the motherboard, case and PSU to be big enough to allow a 2nd 4070 Super or possibly 4070 Ti Super or even a 5080 to be added in later if I find I want to further increase the render speed.

The price of a 9700X seems to be about £250, and a 4070 Super about £600 - so roughly 50% of the total PC cost - I would really rather that these two parts were a higher proportion of the whole build cost - but appreciate that the Motherboard, RAM, PSU and SSDs I have included are probably more than the minimum I would need.

It is a shame that PC Specialist system building doesn't price the components individually as it would be much easier to pick out more cost effective combinations.

You can't just throw any components together and expect to get available performance, that's not how PC's work, it's a system, so has to balance from input to output otherwise you get bottlenecks.

You wouldn't achieve anywhere near the benchmark results you're seeing with the above configuration because you have 3 main bottlenecks that would cause roughly a 15 - 20% bottleneck:

RAM Speed resulting in queue overhead
Case resulting in GPU throttling
Cooler resulting in CPU throttling

Ok - thanks for the input - have uprated the Case, RAM and cooling for another £200 - does this look more like it will work ok?

You are making very poor choices based on budget. Unfortunately there's not a lot we can do to advise you if you aren't going to take the advise.

You're wanting the leather seats and engine of a Ferrari inside the body and running gear of a 2nd hand Fiat Punto, it's not going to make sense no matter how many benchmarks you look at.

You would need to check the interface limitations of the B650 chipset, I'm not so sure it will allow 2 PCIe4.0 cards to run at full speed without sacrificing the M2 or other areas.

The case, RAM, Storage, Cooling are all massively under par. The GPU is a decent performer for gaming but 12GB of vRAM isn't something I would personally consider nowadays even just for gaming...... never mind for blender.

Have you looked into what single thread and multi thread means and how it impacts your usage? Blender doesn't use one thread. I can't think of any modelling/rendering software that does. They're all massively multi-threaded. More cores is better.

Anyway, it's feeling like a bit of wasted time going through all of this so I'll just leave you to it.

At least remove norton, it'll cause nothing but problems.

Ditch norton ;)
I didn’t see the storage first time round, I would strongly advise against the PCS drives especially is this kind of system, they’re prone to failure.

You’d want a P44 pro as the primary and at least a P41 as the secondary

Thanks - have changed the storage over to P44 and P41 - I don't think it affected the price much as I lowered the size of one of the drives, plus also removed Norton, also changed the case from white to black. I've left the graphics card as just 4070 Super for now (as wanting a PC based on that card was really the whole purpose of this build) - but will possibly upgrade and/or add a 2nd graphics card as first upgrade - probably after the 5080 is out.

PS/. Just put this config into Pcpartpicker - and was telling me there isn't room for a 2nd GPU - so have upgraded board too

You've got to consider the physical size of these new GPUs as well as the GPU PCIe slot locations and types on the motherboard.

A lot of motherboard share PCIe lanes, so even if it did have 2 PCIe 4x16 GPUs slots you may find the second one either ran slower, or disabled 1/2 m.2 slots.

Plus those slots would have to be far enough apart to allow 2 thick GPUs to fit comfortably (and allow airflow)...so one at the very top just below the CPU/m2.1 slot and the other right at the bottom of the board...but then you also have to be careful that there's enough space for access to the headers at the bottom of the board, and overhang not hitting the bottom of the case.

Thanks - I'm now proposing an Asus Prime X870-P which to me looks to have more space than the Tuf X670E when I look at photos - but I am pretty new to this stuff - and can't easily find where to find diagrams like the two you attached are for the X870-P

The motherboard layouts can be found in the motherboard manuals on the Asus website.

For example:

Even though the Prime motherboards have improved over the years, I'd still only recommend one where the budget is severely restricted, as they tend to use fewer and lower capacity electronic components (e.g. VRMs, power stages, audio chips, etc.).

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I am almost there now.
Changes I have made to previous spec are
1. Lowered RAM to 32gb and SSD to single 1TB for cost reasons - as they can fairly easily be added later
2. Upgraded CPU from a 9700X 8 core to a 7950X 16 Core
3. Changed motherboard from Prime 870 to ProArt 670E - as it looks like they are more setup for multi GPU user
4. Changed GPU from a 4070 Super to a 4070 Ti Super due to VRAM - with hopefully room for a 2nd one to be added later.
5. Upgraded cooling from a H100i to H115i as the price isn't that much more.
