Blue screen of death

Hello guys,

Ive only had my new laptop for a few weeks now and all in all im quite happy with it. However, I noticed on the first day in crashed with blue screen while I was in a word processor before I introduced any new apps to her. I just chalked it up to one of those things and didnt worry about it, however it has now crashed several times over the weeks under very very light workload.
I can reproduce it now by trying to validate the cache files on one of my steam games. It gives a BAD SPOOL CALLER error or something to that effect on the blue screen.
I have a Vortex II, 15.6'', 8 gig RAM, i7 2630 quad, gtx 460M, with a scorpio black HDD.

Its becoming a bit of a problem now, so any help would be appreciated.

^^ If the PC auto restarts on a BSOD you can disable this.

Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Startup and Recovery
Un-tick auto restart.

Ok everything and restart your PC to make sure the setting saved.

Next time you get a BSOD the PC will just stay there untill you focably turn it off by holding the power for upto 5seconds.

Having quickly done a search on the net, it is possible there is a registry problem - would downloading a registry fix program be advisable? If so which one? Is there a chance it could be a hardware problem with one of the memory modules?

Is a disk format the order of the day here?

I wouldn't normally recommend registry cleaners, but In your case worth giving CCLEANER a shot.
Before you do, maybe worth running windows memory diagnostic tool, lf you have windows7(control panel/administrative tools)
Either that or memtest.

Ta vanthus - I ran windows memory diagnostic tool. While it was running in the status area it said hardware problems were detected. When I restarted the computer the dialogue box simply stated 'Your computer has a memory problem'
According to my system view its picking up the 8Gig of RAM...
So is there anything I can do to confirm a hardware problem or do I have to send it back?

No,It wont void your warranty.Try using one memory stick at a time, possibly finding faulty one,or curing the problem by reseating. If your not confident with doing this, Phone tech support soon as pos, tuesday I think.

Hi zainy, that stop code means that your ram is unstable and normally requires you to go into the bios and raise the qpi voltage.
If your bought it from pcs give them a ring before you do anything as it may effect your warranty, also I'm not sure if you can change your bios on your mobo.

Right. After opening up the chassis bottom a quick look at the RAM chip made me reluctant to remove it as it stated 'Warranty Void if removed'
However I dont think I need remove anything to confirm th problem. I seem to have 2 x 4GB 1600Mhz RAM chips. which is incompatible with my processor (the i7 2630)
Due to a small bug on the alterations page the incompatibility issue was missed but thanks to a catch from a forum member I did phone them up and change my order to the 1333Mhz chips instead and the change was documented. However at that stage the laptop was already built (it was a shockingly quick build - 3 working days) so they must have forgotten to change it.
Anyways Ill give them a call and see what needs to be done here. Pity im in Ireland for the next few months...

Correct me if Im wrong but this is a 1600Mhz chip right?

Just so you know, i think the void if removed sticker refers to the sticker itself and the warrenty with the ram. As opposed to your warrenty with PCS. I was under the impresson (could be wrong) that the chips were the same, and that one is just overclocked to 1600Mhz.

Without removing it, you could just give it a little push to see if it will go any further in to the slot, as in that photo it looks like it may be a bit loose. This may help.

Yeah ive reseated both the chips. It registers them fine but the same problem. Its definitely a 1600mhz set though as PCS uses Kingston chips for the 1600 sets and Samsung for th 1333 sets.
Ill give them a call and arrange a swap at some point. Surprised it has given me such limited problems seeing as the RAM is said to be incompatible. Not too tech savy but I guess there is a reason for that.

Using 1600mhz memory should be fine, your system will just default to 1333mhz, so you gain no performance benefits.

Sounds like you do however have some faulty memory there though, I'd contact PCS.
