A few words about my computing needs as suggested by Steaky360
I am a light user; not running multiple applications simultaneously etc. My highest use would be games, mostly older games.
I am not buying to play the latest AAA titles on ultra settings. I am not an extreme gamer.
I want my new rig to run more recent games (last 5 years-ish) adequately and also be able to run older games too.
I still play some games from the 90s. I buy games from GOG etc.
Generally I prefer to stay some way behind the tech curve. My current rig is a Core2Duo running XP and it has been doing everything I have needed up to this. But it is time to upgrade.
I am thinking of Win7 and 64 bit; I don't think I need a quad core since my usage is relatively light, I don't run multiple applications etc. when I boot up my current computer there is less than 200Mb in ram.
My budget is ~ €700 - €800
So any comments or suggestions welcomed

I dont think I need need six cores. When I am playing a game that is all I am doing.
I tend to do one thing at a time, so for me the single core performance and power consumption is more important.
Thats why I was thinking of an i3 4170.

Won't be able to game very well without a GPU, you'll only be able to run indie games.

As for the 6 core cpu, it will run better than the i3 and a bit worse than the i5
