Build quality, overheating?

Hi everybody,

I've just configured the below high-end gaming pc. While bringing myself up to date with all hardware specifications and attempting to find a laptop that matched my preferences, I noticed that no manufacturer makes exactly what I want. So I came to pcspecialist to do it myself :) . I like the hardware that I've put together, but I'm a little worried about the following things: What's the build quality like? Will the massive graphics card make this thing overheat after a couple of months worth of dust has assembled in the fans? :D Also, how's the balance between video card and processor? And is the 1x 8 gb a problem in any way or should it be 2x4 or something? (As far as HDD space goes, I have a 320gb hdd here already which should be enough for now).

The chassis is pretty nice and robust. You shouldn't get any overheating issues.
Also, how's the balance between video card and processor? And is the 1x 8 gb a problem in any way or should it be 2x4 or something?
The spec you posted looks fine. In terms of performance there is no difference between 1x8gb or 2x4gb.

i want to know if u get the same amount of gaming power in the 15.6 inc as u do in the 17.3? And would the 17.3 be to heavy to carry around all day at school ?

Yes, as long as it has the same hardware it should be the same amount of gaming power. I currently have a 4kg 17 inch laptop, this 17 inch one would be of similiair weight. It's doable in my opinion, but if you also need to carry around a ****load of books or something it might be a bit tough :p

Keynes, I noticed you basically have 'my' pc. I'm currently in doubt whether I want the 15 or the 17 inch version. I was reading your review, if it isn't too much to ask, could you run the temperature check again while gaming? If it went up to 90 degrees right out of the box, I wouldn't be surprised if it was hitting close to 100 now without your laptop cooler. If it goes above 100 it will turn itself off for self-preservation :p I'm not certain how good those high temperatures are for a laptop although my current acer has managed to survive it for the last 5 years...?

On a wooden desk without any laptop cooler during the summer it reached above 90'c degrees which is why I elevate the back of the laptop if I do not have a laptop cooler. Since having the laptop cooler and running the fans at full speed any temp I get is below 85'C (max) with the average below 80'C.

is it an easy laptop to modify the specs by ur self or would u need to send it back to pcs to get it upgraded ?
It's pretty easy to upgrade the RAM and hard drives, possibly even the CPU,but for the likes of a GPU I would get the professionals to do it.

If u have the same specs as this in the vortex iv 15.6 would the laptop have higher heat temp than u would in the 17.3?

Not sure, I would assume the 17" would offer slightly better cooling but for an official response contact PCS.

The difference between the 15 inch version of the vortexIV and the 17 inch one seems to be that there's an extra HDD bay in the 17 inch version and that the sound card doesnt support 7.1 surround sound in the 15-inch version. I think I'll buy the 15 inch one, if I remove the dvd player, can I put the HDD drive of my current laptop (acer aspire 7730g) in the slot that's left open ? So the only HDD bay it has will be filled with the SSD drive and the dvd bay will be filled with my current laptop HD drive?

Also, I'm assuming that 5.1/7.1 surround sound will still be supported through HDMI out? :)
