Built in DVD player

Am I missing something, or do none of the "buy it now" laptops come with a built in DVD player?

Are they deemed a "thing of the past"?!

Thanks for any help.

It would seem so - downloads and USB sticks seem to be the way things are going.
It's going the same way for desktops as well now as many cases do not have slots of CD/DVD drives either, so it's not just laptops.

A DVD drive is just a 4GB (or possibly 8GB) drive, yet it takes up a lot of valuable space in a laptop. 4GB is pitifully small potatoes these days, especially when a 16GB USB stick can be had for a few pounds - and it fits in your pocket. It really doesn't make economic sense to fit a physically large and relatively small capacity device into a laptop these days. In that sense, and for a laptop at least, they are a 'thing of the past'.

And when you get to my age the list of 'things of the past' is embarrassingly long, as is the list of things I know how to do that nobody needs anymore. I know how to set the head gap on a magnetic drum for example, anybody got one of those? Thought not.....

As said by others, yes, they're not really used anymore.

That said, if you do want one, most people pick up an external drive these days if you have to have cd/dvd drives and they're very cheap.

Thanks for the prompt replies chaps. Much appreciated.

Oh well, it seems to be a case of technology outpacing me!! I've got an external dvd drive somewhere, time to dig it out.

Hi there, please excuse my ignorance, I am a complete newbie to online gaming. I'm trying ro configure a laptop within my budget that will easily run a htc vive. With regards to the dvd driver, how do you install windows and the driver info if there is no driver in your laptop?

You use a USB key. They're much faster than DVD's/CD's anyway.

For windows many now use USB sticks to install windows and for drivers that are required before the internet can be found.
If you have internet access then Windows will find the vast majority of its required drivers during it's install anyway.

If you want help with your spec you should create your own thread for it :)

Edit: I type to slow.

That's just his signature - so they are the machines he owns, many people put their machines in their signatures - meanwhile I just put some info about me being a mod but not actually working for PCS :)
At least on a desktop browser signatures appear below a line
