Can I upgrade to a 3080 or 6900 on my old rigg?

Hey folks,

I have been thinking about upgrades as my rigg is getting somewhat slow with more modern games.

Currently have the below:

STRIX Z270E GAMING
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW
16gb RAM

I would like to upgrade the graphics card, and understand that I would need a new power supply probably a 1000w one, but would it be okay to add in a new modern graphics card?

Worry about bottle necks, but my motherboard cant get any newer CPU's and the i7 7700K is the max it can got to.

Or should I just consider a full upgrade? Suppose I could sell my PC to fund some of the parts for a new one.

Thanks in advance, always appreciate your advice.

Cheers.

Hiya, is this a PC specialist system? Could you post your full specs from the order page?

Hey, thanks for the quick replies.

- When was the last time you reinstalled Windows and completely formatted the main drive? Windows will get slower over time which will impact everything so might be worth doing that if not done for a while/ever.

Never had to reformat, and i do feel Windows 10 is still running fast.

- Where are you running the games from? If it's from the HDD, then that would explain why games are getting slower. An SSD or a secondary M.2 (presuming the MOBO can take one) may improve things greatly

Installed a SSD a while back and its working well.

Yeah those are my specs......wow 5 years ago, doesnt time fly!!!

1440p gaming is my main focus. However Sniper Elite 5 is running almost maxed out with great results. I think there may be some life in this yet.

Any point in getting 32gb ram? Probably not and 16gb is fine, i just think i need the better graphics card and power supply.

32GB RAM won't make any difference under most gaming situations...it only really needs that for flight sims and heavily modded games.

I would say, if the gaming performance is still good enough to continue on for the short-term, I would stick with what you have. This is partly due to the still high prices of things like the 3080...but it is also partly to do with the next gen GPUs coming out later this year. Couple that with new AMD CPUs which are set to raise the bar again and I'd be looking at getting a whole new system then.

You also need to factor in buying a new PSU (£100+) combined with the hassle of fitting it as the entire system will need rewiring due to the differences between the VS Series (non-Modular) and the RMx Series (Modular)
Good advice, thank you. I dont really mind exchanging parts out, used to do that a lot with PC builds back in the day (Pentium 3 etc, Voodoo cards :) )

I'll have a good think about it all again :)
