Case Location and Surge Protection

Hi all,

As I (im)patiently wait for my PC, I have been doing some research on a few things. I am posting to ask your opinion on two points in particular:

1. I think we all know that keeping your case on your desk/elevated decreases the amount of dust that goes into it and also reduces the probability of it getting kicked by accident (there was an thread about this in the general discussion section but it didn't go deeper into the issue than simply saying that it's better to have the case on top of the desk). Having established that having the case on the desk is better, it's unclear to me how much it actually matters. The question is, is it worth trying to sacrifice a good portion of my desk space to put the case on my desk or is the benefit of having it on top only marginal/negligible? Where do you have your own case?

2. I'm also looking into getting a nice surge protector that's not too expensive. I know that PCS sells those UFO ones which I think are cool but the setup of my room makes it so that having a strip of outlets would be much better and practical. Can you suggest a surge protector?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about the 2nd point, but as far as the 1st goes: I have my current desktop under my desk and it collects a lot of dust, I've recently cleaned it out and I'm fairly sure I contracted the plague from the amount of dust in there, so I would think having it on the desk would be more beneficial for air flow so I am planning on putting my new system on a desk because of how I think the fans are laid out on my case, and also I think a lot comes down to personal preference as far as aesthetics go, I ordered a NZXT Phantom White case which I love the look of so I don't mind it out in the open for anyone to see, whereas my current case is a cheap horrible looking thing that I wouldn't want on the desk as I don't like the appearance of it, even though I know it probably would be less dusty.

a problem also is whether or not the desk will take it, thats the last thing you want a desk collapsing

I've had all of my PC's under my desk, and i've had no problems so far.. (touch wood). Yeah, they collect a lot of dust, but cleaning it twice a year maybe will get rid of that easily.

My case is on the floor, probably a bad place to be since my carpet is a bit threadbare and tends to crackle after it's been vacuumed (I'm renting, the landlord should really replace this thing that claims to be a carpet), but since my desk isn't big enough to have 2 monitors and a desktop on it, the PC gets the floor :), and no I don't have room for a bigger desk.
But yes, I try not to leave it too long between getting rid of some of the dust :)

Thanks for the replies everyone.
@Rakk: I'm renting too and am in the same boat--small room and an old "carpet" (though only the landlord thinks it's a carpet at this point). I think it's best for me to wait and see how big and heavy the case is when it gets here.

Either way, if I end up putting the case on the floor, I'll make sure I clean it often.

Any ideas on surge protectors? I have my eye on a few Belkins, but would be interested to see what others opt for.
