Castlevania question

So first, a confession: I've never played the Castlevania games.

They are on sale on Steam for Halloween and I was thinking of picking up some of them. Normally, at this price, and for a series that has multiple good games, I'd get a bundle. Where I need help is in what to get, there's loads of bundles: Dominus collection, Advance collection, Anniversary collection, collection bundle...

Any more familiar players able to tell me where should I go?

I'm not hugely knowledgeable about the series as a whole, but I'm aware in a general sense that the earlier games (the ones featured in the various collections you mention) are considered better than some of the more recent entries like Lords of Shadow.

I'd be inclined to buy the Collections bundle of all the older games. They seem to be pretty decent ports of the arcade and earlier Castlevania games. If you get sucked in, you could always look at the newer games in maybe the Easter sale or Summer sale next year. Buying random bundles is why my Steam library has totally gotten away from me!

As a child, I played the first two Castlevanias on the NES.

The second game, Simon's Quest, was one of my favourites at the time: action-RPG, night and day cycle (stronger enemies at night), open world elements, and somewhat challenging puzzles to solve (for a child, at least). :)
