Hi all,

new user so I hope I have done this correctly.Any advice on the following spec would be appreciated.I like fast paced 1st person shooters as well as strategy and MMORPG's. I was thinking this would be a good start point and would be able to upgrade memory later if I need it.I am currently slightly over budget but I think I can justify these pounds for this PC

Hi mantadog,

thanks for the quick response. The PC will not just be for gaming((unfortunately) my partner and daughter will be using for work/Uni.

If the PC is being used for work i.e. presentations, desktop publishing...etc,would the i5 still be a better choice?.

Could I use the Coolermaster haf 912 with a couple of extra fans?(I just prefer the look)

thanks for the help

The i5 is a cracking processor, the only thing its not good for is higher end video editing type things. it will breeze through office type stuff. That type of work doesn't change anything really, so we're still good to go with the above spec .

Also as Keynes said the haf 912 would work fine, it already has a couple of fans so probably wont need extra ones, check em on if you like though wont do any harm. I would just add 1 though.

thanks both of you,

I still feel the i7 would be a better choice,is there any situation were the i5 is better than the i7?

I definitely don't need a harddrive that big.

With the 120Gb of the SSD plus a 500Gb HDD would be as much storage as I need, like memory if I need more later it is easy to upgrade myself(I think).

thanks for the help :)

The extra 500Gb was like a tenner last time I checked, well worth it as you wont find any HDDs for £10 or less.

For gaming no scenarios exist where an i5 is not an exact match for an i7, the only time an i7 will beat an i5 is when games developers start coding for hyperthreading. People were worried about gaming performance of the i5 when I bough my i5 2500 3 years ago, it will still play anything you throw at it. if you don't mind spending the extra for an i7 then go for it, but not at the cost of anything else otherwise you wont have a balanced system.

The most critical component for gaming is the GPU, honestly an i5 is perfectly fine for gaming.

I have a couple of questions

1. Is this case any good? it says suitable for high end gaming?

2. Is the upgrade from 3Gb to 6Gb 780 GTX worth it or not?

thanks in advance I am hopefully about a week away from ordering this and wanted to see what y'all think before I commit myself

I would get a much better case, you are spending so much on the whole system and only £45 on the case. You also want to consider silver warranty.
2. Is the upgrade from 3Gb to 6Gb 780 GTX worth it or not?
For gaming in one screen 3gb.
Mantadog's spec in your original thread is a good choice.

Hi,

thanks for the response and moving my threads soz for being a noob(I swear I looked through dozens of pages trying to find it but still missed it).

Sound advice,I will keep the 3Gb GPU as I am only playing on one monitor atm

What do you think of the FRACTAL DEFINE R4 BLACK PEARL QUIET MID-TOWER CASE? I think it looks much nicer,if there is enough airflow.

I will definitely include the silver warranty.

thanks for your patience :)

I would go with a non-quiet case like the coolermaster 690

Hi keynes

yep have chosen the CM 690

can you tell me if there is any benefit in the Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3 over the ASUS Z97M Plus motherboard?

The Gigabyte seems cheaper and is SLI ready I may want to use this in the future

regards

Either will do, no difference gaming wise. No need for the h55 cpu cooler for the cpu you have chosen.

P.S. Feels like Christmas Eve :)

Looks pretty good, just two minor things, change the GPU to the 3gb version as it's cheaper and won't be useful unless playing across mulitple monitors or on higher resolution screens and even then it won't help that much and also the water cooling isn't going to help keep it quiet, I would just go with the silent CPU cooler as that should be enough :)
