I have not got the best eyesight so wanted a 17.3" screen and this seemed the best option without a massive price jump to the Skyfire or Vortex, providing the GPU is OK as there is only one option with this chassis.

My budget is variable, I could probably push it up to £1,500 if I save for a couple more months but I would rather keep it as cheap as possible and order fairly soon unless something more expensive is really necessary.

What I need most advice on is the CPU and RAM. This will be a general use laptop, no gaming but internet, office, GIMP or Photoshop and I will have multiple windows and webpages open, as well as listening to music and/or streaming live TV all at the same time. My work with GIMP should not be too intensive, mainly cropping and cut-outs for various newsletters but it will involve multiple document pages in use at any one time with up to two to three photographs per page.

I want the SSD for speed and know I could save money by dropping to a 120GB and may do this, it depends on whether I decide to keep a Windows OS on the machine. I will be multi-booting and will have at least two Linux Distros on the go, so if I keep Windows the 240GB will be needed.

I also hope to be doing some multi-track audio recording and mixing, using Ardour as the main program. However, if this is going to push my needs for a more expensive CPU and RAM up I may reconsider. I would be grateful to know if it will change things that much.

I would personally think the following:

Chassis & Display
Optimus Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4710MQ (2.50GHz) 6MB (will be ample for your needs)
Memory (RAM)
8GB KINGSTON SODIMM DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB) (again, for graphics processing, 8Gb should give you a bit of headway. If you do find you need more, it's an easy upgrade anyway at another time)
Graphics Card
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 860M - 2.0GB DDR5, 640 CUDA Cores - DirectX® 11
Memory - Hard Disk
240GB KINGSTON HYPERX 3K SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 555MB/sR | 510MB/sW) (I'd stick with 240Gb, 120Gb is just shy of being enough especially for Gimp and audio packages)
2nd Hard Disk
750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD7500BPKX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)
DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)
Memory Card Reader
Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD: Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo)
Thermal Paste
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND (£9)
Sound Card
Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack
Bluetooth & Wireless
GIGABIT LAN & KILLER™ 1202 WIRELESS GAMING 802.11N + BLUETOOTH 4.0 (Much more reliable for stable connection, there are problems with the intel drivers, nothing to do with gaming)
USB Options
3 x USB 3.0 PORTS + 1 x USB 2.0 PORT AS STANDARD
Battery
Optimus Series 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (5,200 mAh/76.96WH)
Power Lead & Adaptor
1 x UK Power Lead & 120W AC Adaptor
Operating System
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit w/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence (£79) (I would suggest Windows 8.1, but realise this is kind of a marmite love/hate thing for most)
Office Software
NO OFFICE SOFTWARE
Anti-Virus
NO ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE
Keyboard Language
OPTIMUS SERIES GERMAN KEYBOARD WITH NUMBER PAD
Notebook Mouse
INTEGRATED 2 BUTTON TOUCHPAD MOUSE
Webcam
INTEGRATED 2.0 MEGAPIXEL WEBCAM
Warranty
3 Year Silver Warranty (1 Year Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour) (£5)
Delivery
STANDARD INSURED DELIVERY TO UK MAINLAND (MON-FRI)
Build Time
Standard Build - Approximately 11 to 13 working days
Quantity
1

Price: £988.00 including VAT and delivery.

If that's well within your budget, I'd add a year's dead pixel guarantee, and even up the warranty to gold. I'd also consider going for the Vortex IV chassis as it has much better cooling.

I'd also go with windows 8.1
It is better optimised, uses less power, and is faster than windows 7.

Totally agree with this!!! Tiny learning curve to learn the shortcuts, but nothing serious. It is just the windows 7 desktop with a bolt on start screen which you can disable anyway and make the desktop exactly the same as Win 7 if required.

Thanks both for the info. I will probably stick with the 240GB although still not sure if I will bother with an OS, if I do it will be Windows 7, I will hardly be using it as the majority of stuff I do is on Linux and I can't be bothered getting used to Windows 8, especially as the brief look I have had at it did not impress. The Vortex is better for cooling but does put the price up quite a bit and as I always use a cooling pad I will stick with this. I wont be ordering for about a month but will post up a review when I get it.

For graphics work it may be best to get 16gb of ram, depending on how serious it is (is it a hobby or for work?)

Other than that it looks fine

Mostly hobby graphic stuff, a little work but I will probably go for the 8Gb to start with and upgrade in needed. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks again everyone, I have been giving it a days thought and the Vortex does look a nicer machine and it is only about 300 more. It also has a subwoofer, I know you will never get great sound from a laptop but I do like music while I am working. Basically, I have to put off oredering a month or two to get this but I would prefer to wait and get the best I can afford rather than rush in.

It does create a couple more questions, for four quid extra I can go with the Kingston Hyper X RAM, is that worth it? Plus, there is a choice of GPU with this, my gut reaction is the GeForce GTX 870 but that is as much as I am not sure about AMD as any technical knowledge. Thoughts appreciated.

I would stick with an nvidia card in laptops, the amd R9 M290X runs well with some games but very poorly with others, the 870m would be a better choice.

Also, with the RAM there's no difference between them, so doesn't matter which one you choose.

Are you going for the Vortex or Vortex LE?

The Vortex IV, the other is a bit too expensive unless I have a very good couple of months work or a lottery pay out:)
