CPU temps

Been playing watchdogs today on my Vortex 15.6 and just keeping an eye on the temps of my gpu and cpu, my gpu seems fine with a max temp of around 74 degrees Celsius but my cpu hits low 90's and its only on about 45% usage most of the time maybe 55 max, I know that low 90's probably aren't that bad but surely with only using 45 -55% they shouldn't be that high. Anyone else know what there's runs at? I would hate to see the temperature it gets to when its using 90% plus usage.

I'd go for a de dust with some compressed air and a "natural" paint brush. I'd also opt for a fresh lot of cpu and gpu thermal paste too.

Then see how your temps are. I would expect you will see a drop with some good quality thermal paste (less is more) and a clean.

HMM not good. How old is it?

55% id be comfortable into the 60, maybe a touch higher depending on the fan profile in use but 90 is approaching throttling temps for the chip... Shouldn't be anywhere near that on half load.

is the fan spinning properly, have you checked for dust buildup? It sounds like a poorly pasted CPU or a dislodged/damaged/blocked cooler.

I should of said I only got the laptop a week ago, so I don't think it would be that :/

hmm, I'd call PCS.

However, I'd be willing to bet that its probably got too much thermal paste on the CPU. Too much paste, acts like a thermal blanket.

That's a shame I'll have to give them a ring tomorrow :( Not sure if i'd be that keen on re applying the paste myself. The idle temps are around 44 which probably isn't that bad for a laptop just strange how they jump up so much when only at about 50%

edit: then again I have just left it on doing nothing while on my desktop and it has a max of 65 degrees when the CPU is on 0%

Yeah well if its only a week old then it could be an air bubble or poorly applied paste. I doubt its a problem with the cooling system itself as your GPU is fine.

Shame to have to send it back for a simple reapplication of the paste, have a quick look on youtube and see if you fancy a go at it yourself.

I phoned them today and they are going to send some thermal paste I forgot to ask for some remover though, any good video's you can recommend? Strange thing is I just tested the temps again and they don't seem to be getting that hot although I didn't play the game very long though so I'll have to try it for a bit longer.

remember though, less is more! Especially for laptops, as the surface you need to cover is tiny, basically a tiny drop in the centre of cpu will be fine.

Ok thermal paste has arrived and I'm starting to do it, but I am sure the guy on the phone said that the cpu is on the right but looking at it it looks like the gpu as it says nvidia and also has the hdmi cable from it. I thought it was the right also as it seemed to be hotter air coming out of the right as well, so I am a bit confused at the moment. It must be the cpu on the left.

I have changed the one on the left which i think must be the cpu as the other has the hdmi coming out of it. I did notice the old thermal compound was not dry not sure if that's how it is meant to stay or not. I will monitor temps now.

I tried taking pics but I couldn't get the upload to work. Doesn't seem to have done much though idle still around the 50 maxing at 63 :( You would think at that temp the fan would stay on to cool the laptop down but it just comes on for a bit and then turns completely off.

Tested it gaming and max temp of the cpu was 86 so not much lower but what I find strange is feeling the back of the machine the gpu is blowing out hotter air and that only gets to 76 could it be a stat that's reading the temps wrong or possibly the cpu fan just not blowing out the hot air?

CPU fan seems to be working ok I can feel it giving out air it just doesn't feel as hot as the air coming out of the gpu yet it tells me its running quite a bit hotter than it. Screws are tight on heatsink as I just put on new thermal paste.

Blowing out hot air is what you want, so I would surmise the gpu cooler is working ok... That's v strange. If you can upload pics to another site and paste links?

Include closeups of the cpu cooler and gpu cooler, and as Tom said, what paste did you get?

us an external image hosting site and just copy the forum pic code it generates to here if the uploader isn't working.

http://postimg.org/image/avbhhwggv/ As you can see on this picture it looks like the gpu is on the right
http://postimg.org/image/juzkc3bjr/ This is how much paste I put on at first but I re-applied and put less on.
http://postimg.org/image/k0vuavvm1/These are idle temps today which aren't really that bad I'd like them to be lower but not that fussed
http://postimg.org/image/aupmxrgip/These are the temps after playing watchdogs for 20mins

It looks like the paste might have worked although the day I put it on the temps were still going up to 86. Maybe it just needed a bit of time to wear in? I'll have to give it a proper test when I have more time. It seems to run quite a lot hotter when its on charge but at the moment I am happy with 73 being the max big improvement on 93 that it was.

Edit: hopefully those pictures work for you.
