Creative Soundcard or Onboard Audio?

I am considering upgrading/buying a new computer soon, and was just wondering if it was worth buying an Audigy Rx, or save money and just use the onboard high-def? I mean, in this day and age, would there virtually be no difference on performance and sound, when it came to gaming and listening to music etc?

Thanks.

The only way you're going to get better sound out of a modern motherboard is if you get an external DAC to do the conversion.

One of the music-orientated elves will probably be along to help you investigate that rabbit hole.

Hi Gelbs, I went for the Audigy FX, and is great for the money.
The main reason was so that I could connect my Beyerdynamic 600ohn headphones. The card easily drives them.
What did you go for in the end?

I would never bother with any of the offerings other than the default. The money can be put to far better use on an external DAC if you want to do it properly.

The only reason I can think to opt for an addon card would be to drive a high channel system. But again, I would be opting for something more bespoke to do it properly, rather than an in-board card.
