Current build for gaming

How is this looking, should be good for games right? This has been in pre production for 11 days now and after checking the PC builder everything seems to be in stock including 3090 (no pre order message) it’s just the 5950x holding things up. Was hoping to get this soon but unless I choose a older CPU it’s going to be awhile.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated . I have no budget only that I’m not too keen on water cooling.
Also I do want the PC sooner but is the 5950x worth the waiting?

If it's purely for gaming and you are absolutely set on no AIO cooler then you really don't want to look past the 5600X with the stock cooler on there.

Not adding a sealed water cooler on a 5950X is like running a desk fan on a V8 instead of a radiator.

It's always nice having that sort of budget to build a monster build with but limiting the cooling potential of such a build is just asking for trouble.

Only reason I say no water cooling is that I have absolutely no experience or knowledge of the matter, for example does it ever need replacing or refilled? potentially stupid questions I know but that’s how much I don’t know

Ahh...

There are basically 2 types of "water cooling".

AIO (Closed loop) - All in one water coolers are sealed from the factory and require zero maintenance. For all intents and purposes they are as user friendly as a non-water cooled unit.

Open Loop - Custom built water cooling with separate tank/pump/etc. Very cool looking, very effective but require regular maintenance and looked after properly. Extremely expensive and not really worth the hassle unless proper enthusiast uses are in mind.

For the 5950X you're looking at the H115i RGB platinum as the only choice. With gaming in mind I would aim for the 5900X as you will have more thermal headroom for maximum boost clocks.

This is what I would aim for with a few notes:

The Hero motherboard isn't in stock so I've selected the STRIX
The H115i RGB Platinum isn't in stock so I've selected the XT
The 850W RMx isn't in stock so I've selected the 1000W RMi
The 3090 is a waste of money for performance but I understand the choice as the 3080 is like hens teeth.

As your build is pre-production just ignore the above changes that I've made through necessity. I only made them so that I could post the config. The H115i RGB and the CPU choice is the main one. If you really want the "ultimate" CPU then sticking with the 5950X certainly won't do too much harm.

The H115i RGB platinum is definitely the one you want (because lights) but otherwise the XT is the same.

I dropped the audio card and the wifi selection. The on-board audio in the HERO is phenomenal. The AX200 is the best bang for buck Wifi by a mile.

Thanks for this appreciate it. One more question is there any reason for a 5900x over a 5950x? If I’m reading it right Is higher base clock more beneficial than more cores?

The 5950X is the ultimate in performance... but it comes at the cost of heat. With most games, single core frequency is the king. The maximum boost clock lowers as the temperature increases so you end up with a trade off.

IMO the 5900X paired with the H115i RGB Platinum will get you the optimum performance where it comes to single core speed. I genuinely think it will perform better during sustained gaming. If there are uses other than gaming that use heavy processing then the 5950X is definitely a fine shout.

To be honest though, we are splitting hairs. If you want to spend the money on the 5950X just to have the "best" then I can't argue, it's just a huge wad of cash to throw at such an accolade :)

This thing will be 99.9% gaming so yeah and I mean just because I can throw money at it doesn’t mean I should, I’d rather have optimal performance over long periods. Thanks for all the help I appreciate it, will amend my order then it’s up to the gods when it’s built.

I have the 5950X in my build with the H115i cooler.

The processor is an absolute monster and in games I've rarely even hit 40% of usage. I play AC Valhalla, NFS Heat, Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster, Dirt 5, FIFA 21, Train Sim World and Red Dead 2.

Forget the central heating, the computer is a heater itself.

It is definitely a processor that is future-proofed for sure.
