DDR4 or DDR5?

Hi All,

I'm currently speccing up an new desktop pc mainly for gaming (Starfield/Flight Sim/Battlefield) I've got most of the components sorted but was wondering whether or not the jump to DDR5 was worth it... yet.

I am considering 32GB (2 x 16) of DDR4 3600 or 32GB (2 x 16) of DDR5 6000. Obviously the motherboard will be different, but the price difference is just £65 which works out at under 2% increase DDR4 (£3,336) to DDR5 (£,3,401).

I've looked at some Youtube videos but there doesn't appear to be a clear winner.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Cheers,

Pete

It's not so much the speed performance of the RAM but the future compatibility of the platform.

Intel are a dead option, their current chipset is done so won't support any future chips.

AMD AM5 is on its first gen and has support through to the end of 2025, so will support at least 3 more generations.

On AMD it only supports DDR5

@SpyderTracks - Just wanted to check in and make sure you’re okay after having what appeared to be a violent seizure whilst typing.

perhaps spyder meant conspiracy and now one of those tin foil people

Android typing just sucks compared to Apple, I've tried loads of different keyboards and none of them are very good, plus the screen is so oversensitive that it just adds what it wants most of the time

Just to check here. Are you doing a self build? The 6000Mhz RAM suggests so. This forum is for PCS builds only.

Ahh, so you were going with Intel.

Fair enough if you're sorted. I would definitely have another re-visit with AMD as the platform though :)
