Defiance III

Hello all,

this will just be a quick review of the defiance III.

Highlights:

Specs:
17.3 '' display came with g-sync which was a pleasant surprise.
Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ (2.6GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)
16GB HyperX IMPACT 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 - 6.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1, G-SYNC
750GB WD BLACK 2.5" WD7500BPKX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)
240GB KINGSTON SSDNow M.2 2280 G2, SATA 6Gb/s (550MB/R, 330MB/W)
GIGABIT LAN & KILLER™ WIRELESS-AC 1535 M.2 GAMING 802.11AC + BLUETOOTH 4.1

So far so good with the specs, I've yet to do any hardcore extended gaming sessions on this. but it comfortable handles War frame maxed out and fps locked at 30/60 (depending on battery/mains) via g-sync with no issues what so ever.

My current average cpu temp is 48-60 depending on the weather as the UK is quite hot currently. I have the laptop elevated on a broken cooler master stand (fans broke and cables were damaged long ago, so ripped the fans off).

The turbo boost with the i7 is great so far i average 3.2 Ghz clock speed and have had no issues, CPU utilization is always under 50%.

Speakers are great quality and loving the sub-woofer on the underside of the laptop. Sound blaster software really takes advantage of the hardware.

Microphone and camera are both crystal clear and great quality (according to the misses)

I've only had the laptop get hot around the left side of the mouse once which if i recall was due to gaming on the battery.

The image quality from the screen is amazing far better than my first gen m14x alienware.

the Kingston ssd is amazing quick, I've got my two main games installed on it as well as my OS and load times are stupidly fast. I've yet to put the WD through it's passes though.

Keyboard lighting and feel are top quality to boot, typing in the dark is a breeze and there is little button and screen glare to boot.

The chassis design looks much better in person and is quite frankly sexy as hell ^^.

Packing wise this thing was built like fort knocks lol. one larger cardboard box, inside the laptop box on the both longer edges had two cylindrical caps of sealed air tubes which raised the laptop up and allowed it to bounce and not become damage. Inside the laptop box it was packed as standard for laptop boxes. Everything i needed was supplied as well as a Clevo manual and PCS manual. Still trying to work out what these little blue rectangles are ? i think there pads but not sure.

The negatives

definitely a finger print magnet lol but not really a huge issue for me.

I had some driver issues when i first unpacked it which is my only negatives.

first off my nvidia drivers had got corrupted and ge force experience no longer functioned as it should. phoned up got told a fix, what to do, what to get it etc. and it didn't take long to do at all and the solution worked first time of asking.

The manual for the laptop from clevo calls out several software namely the sound blaster, control center and keyboard software/drivers. Unfortunately these weren't installed upon turning on the laptop. I phoned up was directed to clevo's driver website, but for some reason my model wasn't listed exactly. I was supplied a CD but having no optical driver meant I had to mess around with copying it to a USB. Although this isn't a major issue it should have come pre installed or at least on a non-writable pen drive. but no matter all is well now.

The wireless card is great but i've yet to grab the killer software. currently with the best bt offers internet wise i can peak out at 9mb/s with my sister and father both on the internet as well.

that sums the negatives up pretty much.

Overall

apart from the software issues I am very very happy with my purchase, build quality, professionalism, quality of service and the customer experience given by PCS. I would certainly recommended PCS to friends and will be coming back here again.

My only regret is not dishing out for a 1070 as the gpu and cpu are soldered down. But this isn't a huge issue the 1060 will last a good few years which is more than good enough and the laptop as whole will probably deserve an upgrade by then.

I might edit this tomorrow with imgur links with pictures but i don't have access at home to the forums. some weird 403 error which pcs are unable to figure out with me (i've tried).

I would definitely recommend the Def III with a 1060 and if you can grab the 1070 :D

Edit:
I'll bring post a bench mark test within the next week or so and possibly pictures of the laptop as well (closed, open, underside, sides, rear).

I've got the 17.3 '' 1080p. My personal opinion is that anything better is wasted on a 17.3'' lol. but that's just me and my 5 cents. I'm sure your 3k will be what you wanted expectation wise or exceed it :) I will try and get pics tomorrow though no promises. only have access via my workplace to these forums.

EDIT

forgot to add in my original post, i placed my order very late on Friday the 19th of august, Laptop was delivered on the 2nd of September. two weeks standard build and shipping which is average and to be expected :).

Hi Aarpri,

Could you upload those drivers somewhere or send me over by email? I will get mine probably in this week (ordered on saturday with 3day fast track, they are not going to complete it in 3 day, but hopefully they will send it tomorrow..)

if it's not completed within 3 days , you have grounds to enquire for a refund for the fast track.

i can't upload the drivers as they need at least 5gb of space. PCS will supply you with a disk, just transfer the disk files to a usb drive or pen drive with 5gb or more space on it. Then you'll be fine.

You can also download them by logging into your main pcs account and going to the downloads section

not quite. just checked to verify and there is only two files in that section, a file for windows 10 (num lock fix) and one for the Bluetooth/wireless. these aren't the files that i was missing.

but it's not a sure thing that other customers won't get their drivers pre-installed either. was just the issue i had which for the record was a minor inconvenience.

Hi,

I received the Octane 3 at the weekend and over looked the boot disk to start with. Think I had 10 different files on there, Nvidia exp, Control centre, killer etc. Luckily I had a drive to load them up, took about 15/20 mins. On my account, there are only 2 drivers as mentioned above to download.

If you can loads via the disk, very easy to do, but also easy to overlook in the excitement of getting a new toy lol

Hello moosEh, just seen that, thanks for replying. I did pass my driver issues on via feedback as that's the right place to put it. but as the review says I'm one happy customer.

In other news fire strike 3D bench mark image to arrive tomorrow = check this thread as well as photos of the pc.
