Defragmentation not available

The PC I bought has 2 drives :
C: ADATA SU650
D: Intel Optane + 1.8TBHDD.
When I go to the optimisation panel I see the following:

C: SSD type : OK
D: SSD type : optimisation not available

Why for D drive I can not apply a defragmentation ? Is it because of Intel Optane?

SSD's don't fragment.
Defragging an SSD actually damages it by decreasing it's Read/Write lifetime.

There's absolutely no need to defrag an SSD of any type and will have negative impacts on the drive.

Yes, I read about a sort of clever algorithme for SSD but the second drive I ordered is :
2 To SEAGATE BARRACUDA PRO 3,5 POUCES, 7200 T/MIN 128 Mo DE CACHE

Is it a SSD ? And if yes, why I can apply an optimisation on the first and not on the second if both are SSD?

That’s not an ssd.

Ah, I see what you mean, the hdd is paired with optane, I read it just as an optane drive.

It may well be because it’s linked to the optane module.

I'm not 100% sure how Optane is seen by Windows, but I suspect, based on what you see, that Windows sees the Optane cache as being the entire drive D: and it looks like an SSD - hence no defragmentation. I'm also not 100% sure of the internal relationship between the cache and the HDD (and the algorithms that drive the cache) so it might be that if you do try and defrag the HDD you'll screw up the data in the cache. That may well result in lots of data being loaded and unloaded from Optane and a potential reduction in its lifespan....

In any case, an Optane cached drive shouldn't benefit all that much from being defragged. That's because (if the Optane algorithms are working properly) most of the I/O operations are satisfied from Optane and not the HDD. Defragging the HHD thus won't make a scrap of difference to the performance you see.

If it were mine I'd accept that Windows thinks it's an SSD and not attempt to defrag it.

Even if the drive is fragmented, as long as all the read/writes (or most of them anyway) are coming from the Optane cache Windows will never 'see' the fragmentation.

Once you enable Intel® Optane™ memory, both Intel® Optane™ memory and the accelerated SATA drive appear as one SSD volume to the operating system. As a result, the options for defrag aren't available.

What you're seeing is by design, so don't attempt to defrag that HDD.

That is useful info. It would be nice if things like that were made as clear as possible by the company selling them, just had a quick look and apart from Ubuysa's link there is not much about it.

A last question about Intel Optane, mine is 16Gb. In the future, is it easy to replace by a 32 or 64? Is it fixed on the mother board? New drivers are needed?

I have no practical experience of Optane, but from what I've read....

Yes it's easy to upgrade, it's an M.2 module that installs on the motherboard.

There is a 'driver' and control software which you get from Intel.
