Desktop setup steps

Hi,

My first gaming PC is arriving today (didn’t ask or pay for Saturday delivery so thanks very much PCS!)

My knowledge is very poor so apologies for that. I was wondering what the exact steps will be when I set up my PC for the first time.

I’ve read to ‘update, update, update’ Windows so my question on that is will it all be prompted upon start up and if not where would I find the option?

I’ll have a Nvidia graphics card with a g-sync compatible 144hz monitor and not sure if that will all be optimised fresh out of the box.

Desktop comes with RGB and I think I need to install icue to control that?

I’ve probably missed some important stuff so any help would be greatly appreciated in terms of how to set it up and get the graphics card running as well as possible.

Thanks in advance for any patience and responses!

Ok, when you get your new PC, take it out the box and remove any packing from inside the PC and then connect everything up making sure that you connect the monitor to the graphic card and not the mother board, also if you are connecting it to your home network using wifi make sure you've connected the antenna, once that's done leave it for a while to acclimatise (cold delivery van to warm house = possible condensation).

When you do start it you will have to go through the OOBE (out of box experience), read each stage as you go and answer accordingly.

Once you've done that it's time to check for all those updates, so go to settings>updates and security and click the check for updates button, if you get a prompt to restart after any then do and keep going back till there are no more updates found.

Next go to Nvidia.com and download the game ready driver and Geforce experience for your card and install it, you should then be good to

Take your time during the OOBE, there is I know a desire to get that done with quickly so you can start playing. :)

It is well worth taking your time with the OOBE though, you make a lot of choices here which, although they can be changed again later, are best got right first time. Look out especially for the Skip This or similar at the bottom left hand side. Microsoft try to make it hard for you to not use things like One Drive when you have no plans to use them, by placing the 'I don't want to use this' option almost out of sight in the bottom left corner!

OOBE is a Microsoft tool and it's far from glitch free. If you take your time it's almost always fine, but if you start trying to rush it or mess about with it there are occasions when it will glitch out. If the OOBE doesn't complete properly or fully it's almost impossible to restart it. If that should happen a clean reinstall of Windows, allowing Windows Update to find all drivers (except possibly the NVidia driver as mentioned) is the fastest way back to a clean system - and the OOBE again of course. ;)

Note that non-system drives are not usually formatted by PCS, so you may need to go into Disk Management and create a partition(s) on these additional drives and format them before you can use them.

I would then advise taking the time, once you've run Windows Update and before you install any other software or plug in any other devices, to check that everything is working ok. Make sure that every device is there and working. Check that every USB socket works, that every audio input and output socket works, that both your WIFi and Ethernet port work, etc. Just check that everything is functioning whilst you have just Windows installed.

Cheers! Much appreciated guys, how long should I leave it to acclimatise to the room?
