I have over the years become more and more disappointed with the actual depth of the majority of newer games especially on consoles. It like 50% cinematic and some shallow game play.
This has led me to go back t when games where not so much about looks but about story and gameplay, i mean right now i playing Risen again , you just dont get that kind of depth and emergence anymore. Even the total war series , Mech Warrior 3, Starwars : jedi Academy 2 and outcast, many other people have also realised this and started modding older games : to me may not have the graphics of todays games , but they outclass them in depth of game play and stories.

Maybe have a look at Divinity Original Sin and Divinity Original Sin 2.

Total War arguably has more depth than modern Civilization titles, in the diplomacy at least. Which is kinda funny.

I love to play old games also, mostly on consoles (Playstation).. talking about newer games, i think it depend on certain games, not all are money grabber type. If i got a chance to play an old game again, i would choose to spend time with Tomb Raider 2, Resident Evil 1, 2, 3 and some RPG title like Parasite Eve. Action game with a good storyline just my type of gaming.

There are still plenty of new games being released which stay true to the spirit of older games.

In 2017 the game of the year was Divinity: Original Sin 2, which has every bit as much depth as older RPG's like Baldur's Gate and so forth. I know when an RPG has good depth because I begin to get overwhelmed by all the sub-plots for each quest, and I have to resort to keeping a physical diary of where I need to go and what I need to do. There are also games like Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity. I don't think either of them got to GotY level but both are excellent RPG's with depth.

If strategy games are your thing then look no further than Paradox titles such as Crusader Kings 2, Europa Universalis 4, Stellaris, Hearts of Iron 4. I would argue that with strategy game developers like Paradox, strategy games have actually become more mature with time (as opposed to FPS and RPG games which have generally been dumbed down). Oh, and as a real treat for fans of really old strategy games, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition releases in 8 days. Microsoft have actually re-made Age of empires 1 (1997-8) with modern graphics, modern animations, overhauled music. There has never been a better time to be a strategy gamer in my opinion.

If first person shooters are your thing then look no further than games like Day of Infamy. It's a much more modern version of Medal of Honour: Allied Assault with a heavy emphasis on teamplay. There are classes you can choose from, such as assault which is a standard infantryman, a radioman who carries a radio, an officer who uses the radioman's radio to call in battlefield support (radioman has to stay close to officer or officer can't do his job).

Remember a game called Abe's Oddysee? That got a remake. It's called Oddworld - New 'n' Tasty.

Resident Evil 1 (the 2001 Gamecube remake) and Resident Evil 0 are on STEAM.

If you're looking for isometric Fallout-style games (pre-Fallout 3) then there are games like Avernum 1, 2 and 3 on STEAM, Neo Scavenger is an indie title very similar.

Really the only genre that is suffering is the first person RPG, which has been completely and utterly dumbed down with Skyrim and Fallout 4, which despite their massive popularity were utter disappointments for the more discerning old gamer.

Bro did you ever play god hand on ps 1 , i remember i had a ps without a memory card and i used to do hours on that game just to start all over again . Bloody amazing if you like it.
As far as rts i played red alert, age of empires and some hex type games , but once i got into total war and its mods that was it, i dont even bother looking at rts games anymore i just figure it cant be improved.

I very much agree with the fallout thing they messed i t up like they did mechwarrior after 3 like they did starwars battlefront, oblivion was better... they even managed to botch dragon age origins they make nice looking games these days that sell wel and are easy to play, not really what im into.

I used to love playing Populous games, started plaing that back in the 90's; then ther's games such as Theme Park and Theme Hospital which I'm sure I spent far to many hours playing. If there is one game I would love to play again it would be Buried In Time (by EIDOS) which I played in the late 90's, I bought an old used copy from Amazon Marketplace about 3 or 4 years ago but being 16 bit couldn't play it on 64 bit machiness. I did try some some of the sugesstions on the interweb to get it to run on Windows 7 64 bit but it never worked; not even going to bother trying to get it to work on Windows 10.

I also used to love plaing the original Empire Earth, first played that in 2001 and I know that doesn't run on Windows 10 as I've already tried. Hmmm, I still have a copy of Empire Earth II which may run, I'll have a go at some point. :)
