Downloading Drivers

Hi Guys,

I want to check here before I start downloading drivers etc. I've had my new system for a little while now but just wondering what has been installed driver wise on the pre-built system by PC Specialist?

The only reason why I ask is that when I turn on the PC initially, I can hear one of the fans being a little loud, which is the top one however it is rotating around fine and shows the RGB lighting... Not heard it be like this since I installed an SSD.

But anyway, just wanted to ensure an easy and straight forward way of keeping my PC up to date with drivers etc.

As you ordered with windows, it's fully setup driver wise. You just need to stay up to date in windows update and optional updates. GPU drivers will need to be updated separately, usually through GeForce Now, but make sure you do a clean install each time you update them.

What AV are you using?

The only reason why I ask is that when I turn on the PC initially
When you say initially, does it calm down once you're in windows? The temp accuracy won't kick in until windows loads, so it's normal for them to ramp higher during boot up.

Yes, after a significant while after the PC turns on, the noise does calm down, but it's very odd and comes from the top fan (I think), it's like a faint ticking noise. Thanks for your help.

That's good, that's the one you want, no need for 3rd party, they actually reduce performance and security.

Hmmm, it could be a fan bearing on the way out, does happen occasionally. If it's just one of the 2 fans, and it gets annoying, raise it with PCS, I'm sure they could ship you a replacement fan under warranty (if it's still active). If PCS warranty has expired you can resort to Corsairs manufacturers warranty which on the H100x is actually a full 5 years anyway, so you're well covered.

That's in the worst case scenario, but in the meantime, check to see if there's a cable or something that may be even slightly catching against one of the fans, it's possible something got moved while you were installing the SSD.

Regarding the fan, I would be incredibly concerned if it's a fan bearing as this PC is very new! I've had the PC on for the majority of the evening and coming back to it now, the PC is nice and fairly quiet. It's still got a very faint tick to it on one of the fans, but not as much as when it starts up. I'll contact PCS and possibly send them a video of what I can hear/see as well. I honestly can't remember hearing it like this before, so I'll have a bit more of a look tomorrow.

So when you, for example, shut down Windows and it says there are 'Updates', that's essentially updating all your drivers?
Drivers are in optional updates, they don't automatically install, you have to manually install them. It's only windows updates that install automatically but those are OS updates

The difference is that an 'automatic' driver update is suitable for all users using that device. A 'manual' update is required only in certain circumstances or on certain platforms, so its made available in case a user needs it.

Drivers should be left alone unless an updated driver has functionality that you need (common with graphics drivers) or you are having problems with a device (or sometimes problems in general). In that case you should install the specific device driver from Optional Updates. If you're having problems in general it's usually wise to install all optional update drivers in case one of the updates fixes your problem.

Otherwise leave drivers alone.

Thanks for the above, I’ll definitely have a look later.

I’ve looked at the fans a bit more closely, and funnily enough this one was/is an easy fix as it’s got nothing to do with the fans at all… When you take off the front cover of the PC, and then take the mesh cover in front of the fans off, the ticking sound goes away! It looks like the mesh isn’t as tight as it should be and therefore, I believe it’s sucking air in and rubbing against the fans.

I shall ring up PCS shortly to see if they can send a replacement, tighter, mesh cover.
