Downloading games on to external hard drive?

Been thinking about this for a couple of months, because there are so many new games which require more than 20-30GBs of data for each game !

I'm curious if downloading games on to an external hard drive would be more efficient than installing them on to your internal hard drive in your computer.

What do you think?

What would be pros and cons be?
What make would you suggest?
How many TB would you suggest?

Or would it be best to buy another internal hard drive ...?

Installing games on an internal drive would be much better than an external drive.

Having played one of my games off an external hard drive (I took it to work one day to see if I could play it at work and since said game didnt need to be installed (ie a copy and paste job does the trick) I could do that). These are a few points I noted:
1. The transfer rate between an internal drive and external drive will be significantly different, internal drives will be much faster - my game took forever to load up.
2. If its a USB connected drive then if you accidentally knock the connection out the game throws a complete hissy-fit since it cant find any of its files anymore.
3. My external drive did get rather hot whilst using it for gaming (admittedly it isn't anywhere near being new).

So my advice - get another internal drive :)
