What are your thoughts on this setup? Is the quad core i7 overkill?

I intend to do some moderate gaming, including the hosting of servers, though the laptop in general will get heavy usage. My processing requirements vary, although college work only requires office standards, I may delve into the likes of Mathematica and tend to experiment in 3d modelling (I was strongly into it years back, and it may find a resurgence) and graphic design.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to our forums. :)

Great spec, well balanced and capable of handling what you wish to throw as it. Without spending significantly more money there are not many ways you can improve on the power of this laptop.

Nice, but how come that 4 days later, my quote for the same spec is 805 £ ? That's a big difference...

for the extra few quid upgrade HD to the 7200 speed disc or possibly for 20 quid the hybrid. seems to perform well enough to warrant the 20 quid. Also I believe though the wireless is good for gaming doesnt have bluetooth i think

Thanks for the welcome!

The price discrepancy will be because there's no OS on it, I can get a student version much cheaper.

I was thinking of getting a different Wifi card since the bottleneck will most likely be at my router rather than in the connection, and I can generally readily connect via ethernet.

And thanks! I'll look into the hard drive speeds.
