Experts: FRAPS me hard.

Alright so here is the sitch:

1) How much better would a 10,000 RPM HDD perform than a 7,200 RPM in terms of FPS lag while recording with FRAPS?

A consideration I just had: As a HDD is filled up it "goes slower " (Me no know all your terminologies lols). So would it be smarter to purchase a 2TB 7,200 RPM instead of a 10,000 RPM.

2) A much more complex one for you all:

I read here: http://frapsforum.com/threads/best-fraps-performance-tips-afaik.559/ that partitioning the HDD can optimise performance. What he says is:

"For best speed, partition the first 30% or so for Fraps. The first part of the disk is up to
20% faster than the last part (this is known as a short stroke partition). A dedicated
partition is also easier to keep defragged. "

So thoughts, ladies (heard they exist online) and gents? I'll need the HDD (my second drive) for storage of other files, too. So I was thinking go 800GB for the FRAPS then 200GB for general storage (I already have two 2TB external HDDs so stuff like movies are covered ya'll).

3) And a little unrelated, but also too lazy to start a new thread:

I ordered a 240GB SSD, but do I really need that? I need it for the OS (approx 40GB), a few other programs (I reckon things like Chrome + steam - question for chrome = apparently deleting stuff on your SSD and rewriting screws it up. Is Chrome bad for that?) and some games. I'd say the average game I play takes up at least 5GB, so let's say I put 20 games on it over 3 years, we're talking 140 GB. Was I better off getting a 120 GB one? (after reading what I just wrote it seems like 240GB is a correct choice...)

NB: I know that CPU and GPU affects FRAPS performance and whatnot, so here I shall spec you with aplomb:

CPU: OC'd 4.6 GHz intel 3570k
GPU: Radeon 7970HD

See if you gurus can chow down on this and then you shall be repped with wild abandon.

Edit 4) Is it better to RAID 0 two 1TB drives than use a velociraptor? It's cheaper and has more space, but of course, despite my research I know not much of the real speed difference. People say that if one fails the other does too, but I am getting the platinum warranty anyway, so meh. Thoughts?

Hi

I stoped using fraps because files are so big.Now i am using Bandicam and in my opinion is much better than fraps.Files are not big and bandicam not affect your cpu and gpu.It means you are not losing so many frames p/s like with fraps.

I've never used FRAPS before nor have I started to delve into read/write times for random access data on HDD's so I cant help with 1/2. I did have a quick look at the FRAPS link you posted and it seems to me that they are referring to the first part of the disc so partitioning the first 800Gb for FRAPS is probably too much, although I'm not sure that's just how I read it (For a 1Tb drive you probably want something like 300Gb and 700Gb partition (the 300Gb being the first 300Gb available on the HDD reserved for FRAPS).

3) If your budget allows it wouldn't hurt to have a slightly larger SSD, Regarding Read/Write cycles and Chrome I cant find the post but I wouldn't say its going to cause any normal user's a problem. I wish I could find the post, something like if you were writing 20Gb a day to your SSD it would still last 5 years... or something like that. Damn. Going to keep looking I will edit this if I find it.
*Ahem* Anyway Buzz's excellent guide to setting them up right is very helpful (cheers Buzz) http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?14728-SSD-Management

4) I would not use Raid 0 unless you absolutely have to, you do get slightly increased access speeds to the data stored on the two drives but as you say, if one drive fails then you wont be able to access the data on either (only one drive would need replacing though). Even if you could, since some of it would be stored on the failed drive it wont help much. Not good.

The platinum warranty would not cover the data stored on the drives (which you would lose if either drive failed).

You get that watermark logo at the top though, right? And is the quality not lower?

Another option is DXTory, which I am told, relies a lot more on the HDD write speed.

And thanks for the help, steaky.

If You have full version of Bandicam there is no watermarks.Quality is the same like fraps.I dont see any difference between Bandicam and Fraps.Just check my videos on Yt.Some of them was recorded by Fraps some by Bandicam.
Here you have link to my channel on yt.
