Double check the product code as it's easy to confuse some letters,failing that try the option to activate by phone.
To activate by phone,open Windows Activation by clicking the Start button right-clicking Computer, clicking Properties, and then clicking Activate Windows now.
Click Show me other ways to activate.
Type your Windows product key, and then click Next.
Click Use the automated phone system.
Click the location nearest you from the drop-down list, and then click Next.
Call one of the available phone numbers listed. An automated system will guide you through the activation process.
When prompted, enter the installation ID that's listed on your screen into your phone's keypad.
Write down the confirmation ID that the phone system gives you.
Type the confirmation ID into the space provided under Step 3 in the activation dialog, click Next, and then follow the instructions.
If activation isn't successful,stay on the line to be transferred to a customer service representative who can assist you.

That doesn't matter,if you put in the correct code it should still activate.
On a sticker on the back of your PC (or if its a laptop, on the underside)
Would I be right in thinking that PCS install the OS but that activation is left to the customer?
Also that the OP has not tried to actvate it since he did not know where the key was?
Perhaps he should look at the key and activate in the normal way. (unless its me that's confused)

Yes,PCS install the OS and the activation is left to the customer,the OP had not realised he had to activate it,but he has now activated it in the normal way by entering his product key.Having said that,normally you are regularly reminded that you have so many days left to activate.
