First new gaming PC in a long time - LF recommendation

Hi all,

Finally going to take the plunge and buy a new PC. Have previously had a PCS gaming laptop which has served me faithfully for the last 5 years but time for an upgrade and as I'm moving around much less these days, going to go for a desktop.

I'm a little out of the loop on what's what in terms of power and what's able to run which games well, but would be great to have something that lasts me another 4/5 years that I can easily upgrade to SLI for example (if it gets to that point). If that's possible for £1200 would be great, but open to suggestions to make it the best rig possible around that price.

The games I typically play are things like Dota 2, Overwatch, WoW, Battlefield and will generally try out most new games to see what the fuss is about.

Would be very grateful for your recommendations.

Thanks,

C

To keep it under £1200 you could drop the SSD. It would probably be better to replace the gpu when required rather than SLI.

Thanks, very useful.

Keeping SSD seems better to me, so will do that. And drop the Blu-ray/DVD drive as will never use :p

Thanks for your help!

Personally I would listen to keynes. He has a wealth of experience and is one of the most knowledgeable posters on here (which you can tell from his reputation). You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who will give you better advice. :)

I'm not a very big fan of this motherboard. It's incredibly expensive and doesn't have USB 3.1, only has 4 sata ports, and you're not going to be using the other features it offers like faster DDR4, a -k CPU, overclocking, etc. It doesn't support SLI (though I'd agree that a single card solution is generally better).

I would suggest either going for the Z270H (with USB 3.1, better onboard sound, more sata ports, and SLI support), or just going for the H110M-R here and saving £100: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/intel-home-office-pc/

Granted you don't get the M.2 SSD with the H110M-R but that's not going to affect FPS.

Thanks all for the input, really appreciate it. Going to put in my order tonight, so looks like the above build with the Z270H instead.

Thanks!

Sorry, one last question...

When placing order, should I opt to install the OS on the SSD or on the 3.5? Or install the OS on 3.5 and just save the SSD for games?

Thanks.

As Ubuysa said above, definitely the SSD. The best and most noticeable benefits from SSD's for most home users is when booting their OS.
