Funny Clicking Noise, Optional Driver & Cannot Optimise Games with GeForce Experience

KK, today I got my new laptop from PCS - vary pleased indeed with it: real machine!

I have three questions related to the laptop if anybody is able to answer.

1) Every so often I keep hearing a background licking noise as if the machine is taking screenshots. I cannot for the life of me find the cause. In my privacy settings the built in webcam is switched off. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

2) I have GeForce nVidia Experience which allows me to optimize compatible games it finds on my system. For some reason it will not allow me to optimize the game it detects (Elite Dangerous). I just have a pop up box with a red cross saying I cannot optimize it. Any ideas?

3) The laptop came with a drivers disk. Do I need to install any of these or are they already pre-installed?

Thank you.

Most likely a hdd platter going into sleep mode. At a guess have you got a wd black in your system? It's that, don't worry it's totally normal.

You need to run the game and change any of the graphics settings within the game, then save and close it. Then go to nvidia and try setting optimised again, should work.

Drivers should all be installed. Make sure graphics are up to date and Windows update should take care of the rest.

Hi SpyderTracks

Thank you vary much for taking the time to read and reply.

Yes I do have a WD black HDD but it's my secondary drive and has nothing on it at the moment. My main drive is a HyperX Savage SSD. However, the clicking seems to have stopped now.

I played the game, saved settings but I still can't optimise.

Thanks for the advice about the drivers. I noted that the fingerprint scanner driver was not installed, which is what made me ask. :)

Yep, even if you have nothing on the wd drive it will still spin up and down before going into sleep mode. It's annoying but is a "feature" of that particular drive. It's nothing to worry about, totally normal.

Re elite dangerous optimisation, may be worth googling and seeing if it's a known issue.

Re drivers, ah, sometimes they do miss some. You'd need to manually install fingerprint, control center and card reader if you have one. Double check control center is installed cos it's important and gaming will cause bsods if it's not installed. All the rest should be auto installed by Windows I believe.

Thanks again, SpyderTracks

No, the Control Centre hadn't been pre-installed. In fact, apart from Windows 10, nothing else had been installed, though, as you say, Windows automatically downloaded and installed many of them. I'm not complaining about the lack of pre-installed software/drivers as it allows me to decide what to install. But how annoying is that supplied drivers disk? Whenever you want to move around in the main options/selections I get a pop up saying that it wants to reboot to allow UAC to be enabled, or something similar. Even if I open the disk and close it without installing anything it wants to reboot. There's no option to reboot later and if you clock the X in the upper right corner of the pop up box, it reboots anyway. That is infuriatingly annoying.

I just installed Skyrim onto this new beast and I was able to optimise it through GeForce Experience, so I guess my proplem above must be game specific related.
