game controller

can anyone suggest a good game controller for playing rise of the tomb raider on PC? I'd prefer something like a wired PlayStation or Xbox controller if such a thing exists.

An Xbox controller (360 or One) you can just plug in and it will work.
If you want to use a PS4 controller you need an app that will make the PC think it is an Xbox controller, I recommend DS4 (you can use a PS3 controller).

Any wired xbox controller should work fine. I'd personally go for a branded one have had bad experiences work aftermarket controllers in the past.

In answer to your signature, in theory you can...

Both of the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers work as soon as you plug them in with (I believe) Windows 8 and above. I'd personally recommend the Xbox One controller for its comfort and accuracy, but only if you aren't restricted to a budget.

Also, make sure you purchase the Xbox One Controller with either the Play and Charge Kit or a collection of Micro USB's for it to work properly. The official Play and Charge Kit seems to work best though.

You don't need a charge kit, it would be pointless. You do of course need the cable to connect it with. The controller gets its power from the USB connection, it does not need to be charged. Any chargeable controller can be charged via the USB connection to the PC if you needed to.
There are official 360 controllers that have a cable built it. You can get Xbox One controllers bundled with the necessary cable.

Don't buy the xbox controller from Argos. The first one I bought I couldn't configure it.....I think I bought my 2nd from Amazon. Still going strong for 2.5 years.

Argos products are no different quality than anywhere else, in fact you're more likely to get a dodgy item through Amazon than you are Argos because most items aren't actually being sold by Amazon, they're mostly through 3rd party sellers, quite a few of which have been found to be a little dodgy.

I purchased a Pro-Ex Xbox One game controller through Argos back when they added Xbox controller support in Windows 8.1, no configuration necessary, and after using it almost daily since it's still as good as when I got it.

Windows 8 to 10 has had wired Xbox controller support pretty much from the start, you don't need an adaptor, unless you want to use them wirelessly.
