Games of the Year

I don't plan on buying any major titles for the rest of 2024 now, so I think I can fairly safely list my personal games of the year.

My runner up pick for Game of the Year of all the games I've played in 2024 is Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth - I'm a huge fan of the Like A Dragon/Yakuza series and this was one of my favourites in the entire series (they're all my favourites really!), and so when this released back in January, I knew I was in for a really fun time. I've still not fully 100% it, but it is definitely my second favourite game that came out this year.

My overall pick for Game of the Year is a game I won't shut up about and have mentioned it quite a few times on here - Balatro. It's a solo poker game that is all about cheating your way to creating insanely overpowered combos. Balatro has nearly 45,000 positive reviews on Steam since it released back in February and that's just nuts for what is essentially an indie title.

Not going to start a new thread as this post is also about Game of the Year, but the Game Awards have put out their list of contenders.

Balatro is my personal pick out of what I've played, but I've also posted elsewhere on the forum about being very impressed with what I've seen of Astro Bot and Metaphor: ReFantazio, despite not having played them yet.

The Game Awards always make a controversial choice as one of their nominees and this year it's adding Elden Ring's DLC as a contender. DLC absolutely should not be in the running for Game of the Year, but controversy does generate clicks and attention, so job done on their behalf I guess.

Will add more to this thread about my thoughts on some of the new games announced later as I've got to go to work, but Astro Bot won the top prize at The Game Awards. Astro Bot is very much my kind of game as a platformer with collectables - I played many of those kinds of games when I was younger. This might be the kind of game that could sway me into getting a PSN account when the game inevitably releases on PC in a couple of years.
