Gaming build check

Hi all,

TL;DR: Does this build work? Any recommendations for monitor to suit? 2nd SSD vs hard? Ty!

Was looking to order this, just wanted to get it checked out by you pros before going through with it. I've read through the forums as much as I can, and opted for AMD over Intel, stuck with the base cooling for the 5600, etc.

I'm also trying to find a monitor to go with, preferably in the £150-300 range. I've had a look through the monitor thread and a few of the links go to discontinued products, and the cheapest options seem eternally out of stock. Would love any recommendations (saw the G5 links becoming a bit of a meme - I'm not sold on the curved screens)

Would have gone for a 750 PSU, but the 850 is actually cheaper rn. As for storage, is a second SSD worth picking up? The price doesn't seem too different.

Thanks in advance for your help/advice :) Am pretty much at the top of my budget. Mainly for gaming on a mix of MMOs, sims, shooters, and MOBAs, possibly some streaming if the comp can handle without performance drops.

Presuming you're looking at a 1440p gaming system, this looks like a great build to me. The better question for me re storage is "2nd SSD and HDD or just the 2nd SSD?" I'd definitely keep the two SSDs, and add a HDD if you want long-term storage for e.g. music, videos, etc.

As for monitors, I'm with you on preferring a flat screen. The LG 27GL83A-B might be a decent bet for you?

I’m inclined to agree with both @sck451 and @Martinr36 on this one, you’ve pretty much nailed the spec there but having a HDD is always handy.

And Chrome? Ew 🤢

As regards streaming, the CPU will be your limiting factor. An 8 core plus system (with 32GB RAM) would be the ideal setup to have. You’ll just about manage it with this build but it’ll be at low quality Likewise with sims, they tend to lean towards being a bit more CPU bound. But you should be able to play anything you want without issue with your current spec 🙂👍

EDIT - Incorrect bit redacted!

Thanks for the feedback on the storage/streaming potential guys. I already have a 2TB external disk on USB that I use for work docs, music etc. so don't really need the additional space for stuff where load speeds are inconsequential. I'll just keep the 2 SSDs :)

The LG looks nice. Was also checking out the Acer Nitro. The Pixio PX277 is a full £70 cheaper (here) is there something to be worried about on that? :D

Capture card does sound like the way forward. I'll have a look around for one once I'm completely happy with the order, etc.

Would any additional fans on the case be needed? I've read a lot of good things re the standard cooling and kind of switched off on the thread about the science of in/out/negative air flows.

And one last question if you don't mind (they just keep coming xD) - I understand supply issues might be driving up prices at the moment, particularly on the GPU/CPU. Is this something that's likely to rectify itself / drop prices in the next month or two? Just want to make sure I don't place the order now, and before the system even arrives miss out on say a £100 price drop. Cheers!

The way supplies are, I doubt that prices will be dropping anytime soon, in fact i reckon they will keep on rising

What monitor do you have, the 3070 will be waste of money for anything below an ultra wide

Don't have one at the moment as upgrading from a laptop. Was hoping for one around £250 but looks like the £300-400 range is going to be the one.

SCK recommended the LG 27GL83A-B. I've also been looking at the Acer Nitro and the Pixio PX277. If the 3070 is a waste for anything not ultra-wide then I'll give it a pass. I guess this is what feature creep feels like :D

edit: then again, it does have the 5800 :p

Another one to check out is the Samsung Odyssey G5 great 1440p monitor

You’ll just about manage it with this build but it’ll be at low quality, adding a capture card would take the load off the processor and lend itself to better performance
Going to double check this, but I suspect that you might be getting NVENC mixed up with capture cards here.
Capture cards don't impact performance, they are there as a medium between the recorded footage and the upload PC. In a single PC setup a capture card won't do anything, it's only with a dual PC setup, or when you game on a console and transfer footage to the PC for upload, that a capture card is required.
NVENC cores in newer Nvidia GPUs are what take the encoding load of the CPU, so a 3060ti or a 3070 will be a solid choice here depending on the monitor you opt for.

You are indeed correct, I clearly should start going to bed earlier...

Hmm, fair. Being only £100 from the PC Specialist Curry's build - is that worth a look? Particularly for the 3060 -> 3070 upgrade.
The potential issue with the Currys’ version is cost cutting on other key components in order to have a headline CPU and GPU. The case, cooling, motherboard and PSU are likely as cheap as possible. This could lead to thermal throttling and could also limit future upgrades.
