I have a budget of between £750 - £800 to purchase a new laptop for general use and a little gaming (primarily Flight Simulator 2004, EVE and a little WOW).

Now...I currently have a laptop with a 17" screen but it seems quite tricky to get the right amount of "umph" within my budget and a larger screen so I am happy to compromise on that. The specs are quite similar but I'm unsure on the graphics card...2GB GT650M or a 1GB GT740M ??? Also - the Cosmos appears to a be a lighter machine and have a higher screen res...

Any thoughts...

Thank you.

If the laptops primarily used for general use and some gaming then i think 16gb ram is a slight overkill - 8gb should do just fine. For a gaming laptop I would recommend going for the best graphics card you can afford with your budget, and my suggestion is the Optimus V with the following spec:

Chassis & Display
Optimus Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4700MQ (2.40GHz) 6MB

Memory (RAM)
8GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (1 x 8GB)

Graphics Card
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 765M - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11

Memory - Hard Disk
750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD7500BPKX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)

DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)

Memory Card Reader
Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD: Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo)

Thermal Paste
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND (£9)

Sound Card
Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack

Bluetooth & Wireless
GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® N135 802.11N (150Mbps) + BLUETOOTH

USB Options
3 x USB 3.0 PORTS + 1 x USB 2.0 PORT AS STANDARD

Battery
Optimus Series 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (5,200 mAh/76.96WH)

Power Lead & Adaptor
1 x UK Power Lead & 120W AC Adaptor

Operating System
NO OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIRED

Office Software
NO OFFICE SOFTWARE

Anti-Virus
NO ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE

Keyboard Language
OPTIMUS SERIES UK KEYBOARD WITH NUMBER PAD

Notebook Mouse
INTEGRATED 2 BUTTON TOUCHPAD MOUSE

Webcam
INTEGRATED 2.0 MEGAPIXEL WEBCAM

Warranty
3 Year Silver Warranty (1 Year Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour) (£5)

Delivery
STANDARD INSURED DELIVERY TO UK MAINLAND (MON-FRI)

Build Time
Standard Build - Approximately 11 to 13 working days

The price of this comes to £785, and the 765M is significantly better than the 740M and 650M :)

Thanks for the reply.

I like the idea of the better graphics card and trading if off against RAM etc.

Would love a back-lit keyboard but think this only comes with more high-end machines!

Unless you want to go small and get a 13.3" optimus V, that comes with a backlit keyboard too
